ANSWERS TO QUIZ
Q. Vulnerable, as South you hold:
x-8 u-A K J 9 5 v-A Q 10 w-9 8 5 4
The bidding has proceeded:
NORTH EAST SOUTH WEST
1w Pass 1u Pass
1NT Pass ?
What do you bid now?
A. Despite partner's mild reaction, we would not yet give up all hopes for slam. We do not like jump raising opener's suit without a high honor, so we would temporize by jumping to three diamonds. If partner then bid three no trump, we would throw in the towel. Three spades or three hearts would induce us to try four clubs.
Q. Both vulnerable, as South you hold:
x-8 u-J 10 6 v-K Q J 6 3 w-A 9 8 3
The bidding has proceeded:
NORTH EAST SOUTH WEST
1u Pass 2v Pass
2u Pass ?
What do you bid now?
A. Regardless of your methods, your rebid will be the same -- but for different reasons. In support of hearts, your hand is worth a full opening bid, so if you play that two diamonds was a game force, you must jump to four hearts to show a minimum for that action. If you play that a raise to three hearts now can be passed, you must jump to four hearts to show game-going values.
Q. Vulnerable, you hold:
x-K J 4 u-9 4 v-K Q J 7 6 w-10 5 2
The bidding has proceeded:
NORTH EAST SOUTH WEST
1u 1x ?
What do you bid now?
A If you play negative doubles, by all means employ that gadget and then rebid no trump as cheaply as possible. If not, jump to two no trump now.
Q. Neither vulnerable, as South you hold:
x-8 u-K 9 6 5 2 v-K Q J 9 8 w-10 4
The bidding has proceeded:
SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST

What do you bid now?
A Make a jump shift to three diamonds.

Q. Neither vulnerable, as South you hold:
x-Q 9 3 u-K J 8 4 v-Q 10 6 5 2 w-7
NORTH EAST SOUTH WEST
1v Pass 1u Pass

What do you bid now?
A. Your two queens in partner's suits must be upgraded but, despite that, you have no good rebid other than two diamonds.
