Ursuline rolls, 43-16, against Wilson

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ursuline High football team had too much of everything in its game against Woodrow Wilson Saturday afternoon at Stambaugh Stadium, including senior running back Matt Yarab, strong blocking and an opportunistic defense.
Yarab ran for two touchdowns from the 21- and 8-yard lines and a pair of conversion runs, and finished with 95 yards rushing in seven carries, as the Irish rolled to a 43-16 win over the Redmen.
Ursuline (2-0) received some strong competition at times from Wilson (0-2), led by junior quarterback Lamar McQueen, who scored on a 17-yard run, and several other outstanding players. But the Redmen, with a little depth on the roster, were no match for the Irish, who built a 28-6 first-quarter lead and expanded that to 41-9 at the half.
"Ursuline is real tough. They were a lot more physical," said Wilson coach Brian Marrow, who called the Irish "one of the best teams in the state in their division."
Coach Dan Reardon of Ursuline, whose Irish also rolled last week over East Liverpool, 54-13, said his offensive line and defense paved the way for the win over Wilson.
"Our offensive line did a great job in the first half. Don Hanni is the anchor of the offensive line," said Reardon," who also cited his defense that set up or delivered three TDs and a safety in the third quarter.
Hodge, McGahagan play well
"[Defensive lineman] James Hodge got a TD on a pass interception. We got a couple of turnovers [that set up scores] and that always helps," said Reardon.
He also singled out junior linebacker Nick McGahagan, who came up with two key defensive plays leading to the safety on a center snap through the punter's legs. McGahagan also kicked an extra point.
"McGahagan is a very good player. He plays a couple of different positions. He finds a way to make the plays," said Reardon.
The coach also had high praise for Wilson's McQueen, who once did a 360-degree turn to avoid a head-on tackle.
"They have some good athletes and made some plays," said Reardon.
QBs Turner, Harper deliver
Ursuline's other TDs came on junior quarterback Dan Turner's 92-yard pass to senior wide receiver Derrell Peterman, freshman quarterback Dawalyn Harper's 32-yard run and senior running back Maurice Jones' 5-yard dash.
Sophomore Braylon Rogers also scored for Wilson on a 15-yard run with a fumble, while Wallace Ross III added the extra-point kick and also kicked a 29-yard field goal.
Marrow spoke highly of McQueen and junior Marquel Smith.
"McQueen has some nice moves," said Marrow. "Smith made some good plays. He was injured last week and only played offense [Saturday]. He rushed for 96 yards in 11 carries last week."
