New Ursuline director
CANFIELD --Sister Charlotte Italiano has been named director of the Ursuline Preschool and Kindergarten. She succeeds Sister Jan Gier, who resigned to pursue other opportunities in education. Sister Charlotte is a graduate of Ursuline High School and earned a bachelor's degree in education from Youngstown State University and a master's in education from St. John College, Cleveland. She taught elementary school before entering the Ursulines and has worked in elementary education at St. Patrick in Youngstown, Holy Family in Poland and Immaculate Conception in Youngstown. In 2005, she was honored with the Lifetime Educational Service Award by the Beeghly College of Education at Youngstown State University.
Mathematics presentation
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College's Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning is hosting "Cognitively Demanding Tasks: A Prerequisite for Rigorous Mathematics Instruction K-12" from 4-6 p.m. Sept. 26 in the Witherspoon Rooms of the McKelvey Campus Center. The presenter, Margaret Schwan Smith, is an associate professor in the Department of Instruction and Learning School of Education and a research scientist at the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh. She works with preservice elementary, middle and high school mathematics teachers at the University of Pittsburgh; with doctoral students in mathematics education who are interested in becoming teacher educators; and with practicing middle and high school mathematics teachers. Over the past decade, she has developed research-based materials for use in the development of math teachers and studied what teachers learn from the professional development in which they engage.
Davenport Derby
CANTON-- Teams of Malone College students are finding old davenports and converting them into racing machines for the annual Davenport Derby at 6:15 p.m. Sept. 20 in front of Randall Campus Center. The teams decorate themselves and their couches according to themes, all competing for the "Golden Couch" award. The tradition is a throwback to an earlier tradition of bed races on campus in the mid-1950s.
Designing landscapes
MANSFIELD -- The Garden Club of Ohio Inc. will have Ohio Landscape Design Schools' Course 2 on Oct. 10, 11 and 12 at Kingwood Center. The course will be conducted by the Ohio Council of Accredited Landscape Design Consultants. Learning Italian
WARREN -- The Warren Italian-American Festival Committee is offering beginning classes in Italian. Boccie tournament
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ursuline High School Alumni Association will sponsor a boccie tournament at the MVR Restaurant, 410 N. Walnut St., beginning at 4 p.m. Sept. 10. Young Leaders
STRUTHERS --Rachel Elias, a sophomore at Struthers High School, has been nominated to attend the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., this month. The conference gives high-achieving sophomores, juniors and seniors a greater understanding of their roles in democracy and the responsibilities of leadership. Each session is designed to educate, inspire and motivate students by giving them confidence and leadership skills. Elias, daughter of Mike and Deb Elias, is on the Struthers Girls Tennis team, SHS Yearbook staff and is an active member of the Interact Club.
Attending conference
CORTLAND -- Brigitte Morvay, a junior at Lakeview High School, has been selected to attend the National Student Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., from Oct. 31-Nov. 5. The conference is offered to outstanding high school students to study, experience and develop the skills and traits that define and identify a leader. Morvay, daughter of Dr. David and Debbie Morvay, is involved in the yearbook, student council, girls softball and tennis, the ski club and cheerleading at Lakeview.
