Mooney soars past St. Francis



Dan McCarthy tossed two TD passes to Tony Brunetti in the 28-0 rout.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Junior quarterback Dan McCarthy threw two touchdown passes to senior Tony Brunetti to lead Cardinal Mooney (2-0) over Buffalo St. Francis, 28-0.
Mooney scored 14 points in the first quarter and seven apiece in the third and fourth periods.
The distances for Brunetti's TD catches were 16 and 33 yards.
Tailback Jamelle Bowers had eight carries for 58 yards for the winners.
Brandon Beachum had a 29-yard touchdown run as did Michael Zordich from 1-yard out. McCarthy completed four of eight passes for 117 yards.
Mark Babyak kicked all four PATs against the Red Raiders, who were playing their opener.
Builds lead
Michael Zordich's 1-yard run increased the lead to 21-0 at 3:41 of the third after a seven-play 49-yard march.
Just 42 seconds into the fourth, Mooney, struck for a fourth time when McCarthy hit Brunetti from 33 yards out. It followed a four-play, 48-yard drive.
St. Francis' quarterback was Lucas Tasker, son of former Buffalo Bills standout Steve Tasker.
Mooney's first score was Beachum's 29-yard run and Mark Babyak's kick at 9:14. The four-play drive covered 52 yards.
On the second play of the Cards' second possession, quarterback Dan McCarthy and receiver Dan Pederzolli hooked up for a 61-yard pass play. Three plays later, Tony Brunetti caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from McCarthy. Babyak's kick put Mooney up, 14-0, at 4:48 of the first period.
Cards dominated
At halftime, Mooney had a 7-6 edge in first downs and 172 total yards. Mooney 95 ground on 15 carries. Beachum had three carries for 31 yards, Mike Zordich had four attempts for 28 yards. McCarthy completed two of three passes for 77 yards.
In the first half, Mooney held the Red Raiders (0-1) to 57 total yards, 52 of which were on the ground.
Mooney's opening-week victory was a 20-14 win over Walsh Jesuit.
