SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- A free, four-part lecture celebration, "Science and Technology in the New Age," will mark the opening of Slippery Rock University's $14.5 million Advanced Technology and Science Hall.
"We thought it would be a great idea to open the building by allowing the students, faculty, staff and the community to tour the new facility and participate in a series of technology-related lectures of interest to all segments of the campus and community," said Dr. Bruce Russell, dean of the College of Business, Information and Social Sciences.
The new building, financed through Pennsylvania capital improvements funding, is a 76,000-square-foot facility at the southern entrance to campus. It has more than 20 science teaching and research labs, a 120-unit computer science lab, study lounges and faculty offices.
A $250,000 commitment from the Snyder Charitable Foundation in Kittanning, Pa., financed for the lobby outside the building's auditorium.
The lecture series will be in the building's main auditorium and begins at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11 with "Technology and the War on Terror," featuring Roland Mertz, deputy director for critical infrastructure and community liaison for the Pennsylvania Office of Homeland Security.

12:30 p.m. Sept. 12: Dr. Tamra Schiappa, assistant professor of geography, geology and the environment, addresses women working in the field of geology in "From Fossils to Faults: Women Investigating the Earth."
7:30 p.m. Sept. 13: Shiya Ribowsky, former director of special projects for the New York City Medical Examiner's Office, will discuss "Forensics in the Public Eye."
12:30 p.m. Sept. 14: Joe Murzyn, executive assistant to the attorney general of Pennsylvania, will discuss "Technology and Identity Theft."
Building tours will be offered at 7 p.m. Sept. 12 and 14.
