Local colleges
A number of area colleges rated highly in national comparisons made by various ranking organizations that looked at various aspects of college life:
WESTMINSTER COLLEGE, NEW WILMINGTON, PA.
Third among liberal arts colleges and in the top five of all colleges in graduation rate performance by U.S. News & amp; World Report's 2007 "Guide to America's Best Colleges." Westminster College's 76 percent graduation rate was 17 percent higher than predicted. The indicator, developed by U.S. News and previously called "value added," shows the effect of the college's programs and policies on the graduation rate of its students.
Featured in the 2007 edition of The Princeton Review annual college guide, "The Best 361 Colleges." Westminster also is honored as one of the "Best Northeastern Colleges." Only about 15 percent of the four-year colleges in America and two Canadian colleges are included in the book. Westminster is described as a place where personal attention is the norm, and students cite the faculty and administrators as one of the school's greatest assets.
GROVE CITY COLLEGE, GROVE CITY, PA.
U.S. News & amp; World Report again ranks Grove City College the No. 1 "Best Value" in its category in its 2007 guide. This year marks the fifth consecutive year that Grove City has been named in the top spot. Grove City also remains at the top of the guide's "America's Best Colleges" list among northern comprehensive colleges, listed at No. 7.
The Intercollegiate Studies Institute has recommended Grove City College as one of 50 "All-American Colleges," and included the college in the publication, "All-American Colleges: Top Schools for Conservatives, Old-Fashioned Liberals, and People of Faith."
ISI highly recommends the college as a school with programs tied to the "core values of the American founding and the vibrant intellectual traditions of the West."
MOUNT UNION COLLEGE, ALLIANCE, OHIO
For the 16th consecutive year, Mount Union College is ranked among the top 20 comprehensive colleges in the Midwest by the editors of U.S. News. This year, Mount Union is ranked 12th among the Midwest comprehensive colleges. It's ranked seventh in the "Great Schools Great Values" section of the rankings.
OHIO UNIVERSITY, ATHENS, OHIO
U.S. News ranks Ohio University in the upper half of 248 national universities in its annual "America's Best Colleges" edition, tied at 110 with Florida State University. The university ranks ninth among the 248 national universities for graduation rate performance. The success is consistent with the rankings in previous years of 14th, 15th and 7th.
Washington Monthly ranks Ohio University 40th out of 245 public and private schools in the magazine's second annual college guide. The Washington Monthly rankings measure the positive impact a university makes.
ALLEGHENY COLLEGE, MEADVILLE, PA.
Featured in the 2007 edition of The Princeton Review annual college guide, "The Best 361 Colleges." One of 40 colleges profiled in the new edition of Loren Pope's "Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools That Will Change the Way You Think About Colleges," earning a citation as a model of the kind of college that prepares future leaders.
Jumped six spots from last year in the U.S. News "Best Liberal Arts Colleges," coming in at 82 among 215 schools.
MALONE COLLEGE, CANTON, OHIO
U.S. News ranks Malone among the top colleges and universities in the Midwest under the category "University -- Master's" in the latest edition of "America's Best Colleges 2007." Malone ranks 55th among 142 schools in its category.
