In 1795, English poet John Keats is born in London. In 1864, Nevada becomes the 36th state. In 1926, magician Harry Houdini dies in Detroit of gangrene and peritonitis resulting from a ruptured appendix. In 1941, the U.S. Navy destroyer Reuben James is torpedoed by a German U-boat off Iceland with the loss of some 100 lives, even though the United States had not yet entered World War II.
October 31, 1981: Gov. James A. Rhodes signs a bill allowing county commissioners to levy a piggyback sales tax of 1 percent without a vote of the people.
Three more men are bound over to the Mahoning County grand jury in the death of Reserve Deputy John Litch Jr., including Robert Glenn, 25, who escaped during the killing of Litch, and his brother, John Glenn, 19, who participated in the attack on a police cruiser to release his brother.
October 31, 1966: A Halloween party ends tragically when a 28-year-old driver crashes head-on into an on-coming car on a downtown Youngstown freeway. Ronald Carter had entered the freeway from the Salt Springs exit ramp. He was pronounced dead at South Side Hospital where the other driver is hospitalized.

October 31, 1931: In reply to a demand by Judge Mark Moore that Mayor Joseph L. Heffernan name the Moore backers Heffernan denounced, Heffernan challenges Moore to a debate.
William L. Edison will contest the will of his father, Thomas A. Edison, claiming that his stepmother and half-brother exerted undue influence to inherit his father's millions. Edison had six children by two marriages. William claims that every major invention his father produced was done before he entered his second marriage.
