Hundreds to participate in '06 youth convention

Two experts in youth ministry will give keynote addresses.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 2006 Diocesan Youth Convention, "Brick by Brick: Build Your Life on Christ," is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 12 at Cardinal Mooney High School, 2545 Erie St.
About 400 teenagers and chaperons from throughout the six-county diocese will participate in the event sponsored by the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry and supported in part by the Annual Appeal for Church and Charity.
Activities will include Mass with Monsignor Robert Siffrin, diocesan administrator, and keynote addresses by experts on youth ministry, Maggie and Bob McCarty.
The McCartys have a combined 60 years in ministry. She is the director of development for the Good Shepherd Center, a residential treatment program for adolescent girls in Baltimore. He is executive director of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, based in Washington, D.C.
They present workshops and retreats internationally, volunteer on their youth ministry team at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Fulton, Md., and received their doctors of ministry degrees from the Graduate Theological Foundation in Indiana.
What's planned
There will be more than 20 workshops sessions, prayer experiences and an interactive venue, "The Construction Zone," featuring hands-on learning activities, service projects games and music.
Workshop topics will include dating, parent-teen relationships, service, prayer, Catholicism 101, war and peace, environmental justice, Scripture, music and spirituality.
Teens must attend as part of a parish or school group, and should contact youth or campus ministers for registration materials. The cost is 30 per person for registrations postmarked by Oct. 30. Registrations postmarked between Oct. 31 and Nov. 5 will be charged an additional late registration fee of 10 per person, space permitting.
