Townsend, Napolet lead way



Warren JFK's standout QB and head coach earned top honors in Division V.

COLUMBUS -- Warren JFK senior quarterback J.J. Townsend was named offensive co-player of the year in Division V, while Eagles coach Tony Napolet shared coach of the year honors in the 2006 Associated Press All-Ohio football teams, based on the balloting of a statewide panel of sports writers and broadcasters.
Townsend threw for 1,507 yards and 17 TDs and rushed for 600 yards and nine scores in the regular season, leading the Eagles (14-0) to an undefeated regular season and a berth in Saturday's state championship game against St. Henry (13-1) at Canton's Fawcett Stadium.
Senior safety Anthony Kokal was a first-team all-Ohioan along with Townsend, while teammates Tom Mariani, Rob Dray and Jared Province earned special mention.
Rach top defensive player
South Range senior linebacker David Rach, who helped the Raiders win their first 12 games before falling to JFK in the regional final, was named the defensive co-player of the year. The Raiders won the Associated Press poll title. Rach forced four fumbles and had 16 tackles for minus yardage in the regular season.
Range defensive lineman Matt Baird was named to the second team, while teammates David Heck and Steve Bensinger were special mention.
Springfield senior wideout Corey Cunningham was a second team selection and his teammate, junior quarterback Nate Schuler, was special mention.
Crestview senior linebacker was a second team selection, while Andrew Kestner and Shayn Danks made special mention. Other special mention selections included Tim Shahan (Newton Falls), Mike Ryan (LaBrae) and Steve Tsilimos (Lisbon).
Moherman tops Div. VI
In Division VI, Western Reserve senior quarterback Brandon Moherman was a first team selection after leading the Blue Devils to an 8-2 record and a playoff berth. Joining him on the first team were Southern senior running back Nick Puckett, Mineral Ridge senior kicker Nick Dominic and Columbiana senior defensive lineman Chris McIntyre.
Columbiana senior running back Joe Winters, Western Reesrve senior defensive lineman Chris Tofilski, Lowellville senior linebacker John Moore and McDonald senior defensive back Scott Sentner made the second team.
Special mention selections include Matt Krumpak (McDonald), Eddie Gonda (Youngstown Christian), Matt Firment (McDonald), Sean Shoaf (Southern), Carmen Lamancusa (Mathews), Mark Greene (Mineral Ridge), John Yakubov (McDonald), Aaron Valentine (Leetonia), Kent Cunningham (Mineral Ridge), Mackie McGarry (Columbiana), Jon Williams (Leetonia), Cory Guy (Columbiana) and Bill Jawhari (Western Reserve).
Shared top honors
Outside the area, Johnstown-Monroe's Marcus Hendren, who rushed for 2,900 yards through the playoffs after totaling 2,550 during the regular season, was one of the offensive players of the year in Division V. Other defensive players of the year are Lima Central Catholic back Drew Kirkland, who had 10 interceptions including three he returned for touchdowns and Louisville Aquinas linebacker Kendall Washington, a Michigan State signee who has 12 sacks in addition to starring as a receiver.
Ada quarterback Zac Dysert won the offensive honors in Division VI. The defensive honoree is Norwalk St. Paul linebacker Joe Stoll.
The coaches of the year in Division VI were Chad Grandstaff, whose first Danville team lost its opener and then ran off nine wins in a row; and Beallsville's Dave Caldwell, who guided his team to its first 10-0 mark since 1977.
The other coaching award in Division V went to Bedford Chanel's Dave Stupka, whose team broke free from back-to-back 4-6 records to go 9-1 and make the playoffs.
