Stambaugh golf fees go up

YOUNGSTOWN — It’s going to cost 50 cents more beginning next month to play a round of golf at the city-owned nine-hole Henry Stambaugh Golf Course.

The city’s Park and Recreation Commission on Thursday approved the first rate increase at the Gypsy Lane course since 2004. The commission also increased yearly membership fees that permit unlimited use of the North Side course by $25.

Even with the increases, the green fees for Stambaugh are among the least expensive in the Mahoning Valley, said Joseph R. McRae, the commission’s director.

Beginning Jan. 1, it will cost $7.50 for an adult city resident to play nine holes and $8 for nonresidents.

The course’s revenue for this year is about $100,000 with about 70 percent of it from green fees. About 25 percent of its revenue came from motorized cart rentals.

“We need to make improvements to the golf course and our costs are going up,” said Denise Warren, the commission’s vice chairwoman.
