Boardman's free throws topple Solon 51-48 in overtime battle



BOARDMAN -- The Boardman High girls basketball team connected on 28-of-39 foul shots (73 percent) and that was difference as the Spartans posted a 51-48 overtime victory over Solon Wednesday in the Spartans' gymnasium.
The Spartans (2-0) had only 10 field goals, but outscored Solon 9-6 in the extra period.
Courtney Schiffauer sparked the Spartans with 21 points, 13 on free throws.
Darryce Moore added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Solon (1-1) was led by Dana Banda with 12 points.
Solon made 18 of 53 shots, but shot just 7 of 18 from the foul line.
Yo. Christian 34, East Palestine 27
EAST PALESTINE -- Juniors Vicki Bankhead and Kara Cooper had 16 points apiece for Youngstown Christian (2-0), which had 19 steals. Five of Bankhead's points came in the fourth period, when Youngstown Christian put up 10 points to East Palestine's four.
Bankhead also had seven rebounds, while teammate Sara Bell had six. Alyssa Rojas had seven steals.
The Bulldogs made 12 baskets to Youngstown Christian's 11, but the Eagles were 12 of 20 at the foul line. East Palestine was 3 of 3 at the charity stripe.
For East Palestine, Jennie Allison had six of her team-high 15 points in the third period. Erin Reese, a 5-7 junior post player, grabbed seven rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Minerva 48, United 27
MINERVA -- The Lions (2-0) built a 26-18 halftime lead and the Golden Eagles (2-1) couldn't catch up.
Misti Anderson sparked the Lions with 15 points.
Maggie Miller and Maggie Sell each scored six points for the Golden Eagles.
Southeast 46, Garfield 30
GARRETTSVILLE -- Southeast outscored Garfield 28-14 in the second half. Hannah Haviar took scoring honors for the Pirates with 22 points, with six of her points coming from 3-point range.
