COLUMBUS -- Canfield High's Pat Bellish and Sean Baker were named first team Division II All-Ohio Monday by The Associated Press.
They led the Cardinals to an 8-2 record, a share of the Metro Athletic Conference championship, and a berth in the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
They were joined on the first team by East Liverpool punter Jim Wood.
Earning second team honors were Tomaz Hilton of The Rayen School, as an offensive end, and quarterback Joey Wines of East Liverpool.
The Potters also had three players make honorable mention: Tony Metsch, Shane Reed and Marcus Collins.
Mike Cook of Howland was also named to the honorable mention squad.
Herron named in Div. I
In Div. I, Warren Harding running back Dan Herron was named to the first team. Herron rushed for 1,026 yards and 11 TDs for the Raiders, and signed with Ohio State.
Three other Warren Harding players were named: Chris Anzevino and Sidney Glover made second team, and Chris Rucker was named honorable mention.
Two backs who rushed for more than 2,000 yards this season, Canton McKinley's Morgan Williams in Div. I and Piqua's Brandon Saine in Div. II, were the top honorees.
Williams, a 6-foot, 190-pound senior, was selected as the offensive player of the year in the big-school division, based on the recommendations of a state panel of sports writers and broadcasters.
The defensive players of the year in the division were Cincinnati Colerain back Eugene Clifford and Cleveland Glenville linebacker Bruce Davis.
Coaches of the year
The Div. I coaches of the year were Jeff Jones of Galloway Westland, Fremont Ross' Derek Kidwell and Matt Jordan of Painesville Riverside. Kidwell is a former AP Mr. Football winner in Ohio.
Saine, along with Clifford an Ohio State signee, shared the Div. II offensive player of the year honors with Pickerington Central quarterback Chazz Anderson and Macedonia Nordonia running back Jordan Mabin.
Mayfield's Sam Fikaris, a 6-3, 280-pound senior lineman, was selected as the defensive player of the year in Div. II.
The coaches of the year were Ashland's Scott Valentine and East Cleveland Shaw's Rodney Brown.
Williams has topped 2,000 yards the past two seasons and has more than 5,000 rushing yards in his career.
Clifford totaled 100 tackles and had seven interceptions for Colerain. Davis was everywhere for Glenville's Tarblooders, with 117 tackles including 56 solos, an interception, two fumbles caused, one recovered and three sacks.
Jones guided Westland to a 7-3 mark -- its first winning season since 1994 -- and its first trip to the playoffs after going 1-9 in 2005. Kidwell took over at Ross three years ago with the school 1-19 in its previous two seasons; since then he has put together seasons of 4-6, 5-5 and, this year, 10-0. Riverside had gone 2-8 four straight seasons before Jordan led the school to a 4-6 mark a year ago and then a 7-3 record this season which included a trip to the playoffs.
Scored 35 touchdowns
Saine has 30 touchdowns rushing this season -- and five more on defense. During the regular season, Anderson completed 110-of-181 passes for 1,562 yards and 18 touchdowns and also ran for 500 yards. Mabin, who will play at Northwestern next year, carried 204 times for 1,757 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Fikaris was a superlative two-way lineman who had 16 tackles for a loss, seven sacks, caused two fumbles and batted down two passes on defense.
Valentine led Ashland to a 10-0 mark and its first AP poll championship while Brown took over a team that had gone 3-27 the previous three years and went 8-2 and took Shaw to the playoffs for the first time in 13 years.
