AUSTINTOWN -- The Mahoning County District Board of Health said 89 percent of the businesses approached refused to sell tobacco products to people under 18 during its annual compliance check. Four volunteer drivers and several students from Jackson-Milton, Canfield, Austintown and Boardman schools participated in the check. A total of five sales were made. The penalty for selling tobacco to minors is a 500 fine, health officials said.
Winterfest Dance
GIRARD -- The sixth annual Winterfest Dance for all high-school-age students with multiple, orthopedic or developmental disabilities will be from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at Mahoning Country Club, 710 Liberty Street East S.E. The dance will be semiformal and chaperoned by The Rayen School special education units staff, administration, security and student helpers. A snow prince, snow princess and Winterfest court will be randomly drawn from each school's ticket box. Santa, Mrs. Claus and some elves will also attend. Cost is 7 per ticket and includes dinner. Gas station robbed
HUBBARD -- A man armed with a meat cleaver escaped with an undisclosed amount of money after robbing the Shell gas station on West Liberty Street about 8:30 a.m. Sunday. Police described the robber as a black male, 5 feet 8 inches tall and about 40 years old.
Three-car accident
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police said Virginia Gibson, 58, of Imperial Street, caused a three-car accident at U.S. Route 422 and West Bound Service Road at 1:40 p.m. Saturday. Officers on duty Sunday said seven people were hurt, but they had no information on who was injured or how bad. Gibson is charged with driving under suspension and disobeying a traffic-control device.
Facing assault charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- A city woman faces two assault charges. According to police, officers were called to 1025 Belle Vista at 11:24 p.m. Saturday where a large crowd had gathered in a parking lot. Reports say Regina Jones, 31, of Stewart Street, drove toward the crowd and threw a bottle at a woman in the crowd. Jones missed the woman, but the car Jones was driving hit a parked police car. Jones has been charged with two counts of felonious assault, one for the alleged attack on the woman and one for hitting the cruiser, in which an officer was sitting.
Santa's Snippers
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- New Castle Beauty School, 314 E. Washington St., will have its fourth annual Santa's Snippers cut-a-thon to benefit the Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County from noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 3. Lawrence County Cosmetologists Against Domestic Violence, under the supervision of Darlene Hetrick, director of the beauty school, hosts the event. Local salon owners and stylists have agreed to donate their time and talent by giving hair cuts for a 5 donation, as well as all of their tips, to benefit the shelter for abused women and children.
