2 teenagers receive Eagle Scout awards
Two teenagers have received their Eagle Scout awards, Boy Scouting's highest honor. They are Jonathan R. Olney and David G. Smallsreed, both of Boy Scout Troop 8, sponsored by the Elmer Dade American Legion Post 699 in Leavittsburg.
Jonathan is the son of Greg and Cheryl Olney of Warren Township. His brother Stephen is also an Eagle Scout.
He started in scouting when he was 6 as a Tiger Cub Scout. He earned his religious emblem and the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouting's highest honor.
He became a member of Troop 8 when he was 10. He has 32 merit badges and has earned he Polar Bear, Pathfinder and Trapper awards.
He has attended four years of summer camps and has held positions of assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, scribe, assistant senior patrol leader, troop guide, chaplain aide and historian.
His Eagle Scout service project consisted of drafting a design, gathering materials and constructing a wooden information kiosk sign for the Trumbull County MetroParks bike trail at state Route 305 in Champion. The sign is 9 feet above ground, and it allows park commissioners to place maps, upcoming events and trail rules under Plexiglas.
Jonathan, 17, is a junior at LaBrae High School. He is a member of the Ski Club, plays the trombone in the symphonic band, has jumped high hurdles in track for two years and played youth soccer for nine years.
Smallsreed is the son of Steven and Doris Smallsreed of Braceville and Rick and Bar Darby of Bazetta.
He joined the Cub Scouts in the third grade and crossed over to Troop 8 after earning his Arrow of Light award.
Smallsreed has earned 34 merit badges and the Polar Bear Award. He also has earned the World Conservation and National Historic Trail awards. He attended six years of summer camp, earning his Path Finder award.
He has held positions of patrol leader, chaplain aide, historian, librarian, quartermaster, troop guide and senior patrol leader.
Smallsreed's Eagle Scout service project was for the Trumbull County MetroParks bike trail and consisted of drafting a design, gathering materials and constructing the brick walkway leading to and surrounding the wooden information sign.
Smallsreed graduated from LaBrae High School in June. He was a member of the German Club and traveled to Germany. He participated in the school's Physics Olympics, lettered in track for three years, cross country for two years and played soccer for six years.
He has enlisted in the Air Force and will be leaving for boot camp training in February.
