Girard chemical bombs
GIRARD -- City police are trying to determine who is responsible for placing two drain cleaner chemical bombs on the property of an elderly Dravis Street man Thursday.
Police reports say one of the bombs detonated about 10 p.m., causing a loud explosion. The homeowner said unknown people have been knocking on his doors and windows and running for the past month or so. The chemicals for the bomb had been mixed in Pepsi bottles and left on the porch of the home and near the end of the driveway. No injuries or property damage were listed in police reports.
Christmas concert
LISBON -- New Lisbon Presbyterian Church will host the Lisbon Community Chorus Christmas Concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The concert will feature the Kentland String Ensembles and soprano Corrine Morini.
He's coming to town
YOUNGSTOWN -- Santa Claus makes his arrival on Central Square in downtown Youngstown at 3 p.m. Dec. 2. Plazateer Marching Band will perform at that time, and a magic show follows at 4 p.m., featuring a performance by John Steven Bloom. The annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony also takes place that day.
Tree plantings in Salem
SALEM -- Some 48 trees will be planted in the devil strips throughout the city starting Tuesday. The Salem Shade Tree Commission said the Davey Tree Expert Co. will do the actual plantings. The program is financed with a 20,000 donation from the Salem Community Foundation. The Davey Tree Expert Co. is donating a Pin Oak tree that will be planted in the tree lawn at St. Paul Catholic Church at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Two Callery pear trees will also be planted at the same time. City, shade commission, foundation and church officials and members will be present.
Baby sitters' training
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Red Cross will have a Babysitter's Training Course from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 21-22 at the Chapter House, 661 Mahoning Ave.
The interactive course teaches first aid and safety skills so baby sitters can prevent and respond to emergencies. Cost for the two-day class is 40. Participants will receive a first-aid kit, baby sitter's handbook and a backpack for the price of admission. Those attending should bring a sack lunch. Anyone who wants to register should call the Red Cross at (330) 399-2551.
Christmas tree lighting
HOWLAND -- The township's annual Christmas tree lighting will be at 6 p.m. Dec. 5 at Howland Central Park on East Market Street across from Giant Eagle Plaza. It will be a collection point for new, unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots. Howland Little Tiger will be selling food, with proceeds going to the Toys program. Toys can also be dropped off at Coldwell Banker's First Place Real Estate office in the plaza.
Rescuer's CPR course
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering a CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer course from 6 to 10 p.m. Dec. 5 and 7. Participants will learn how to care for respiratory emergencies by using the advanced skills of two-person CPR and the use of resuscitates, including the use of the automated external defibrillator and bag-valve mask. This course is designed for individuals who are required to respond to an emergency as part of their job, but is open to anyone who is looking to go a step above basic-level CPR training. The 61 cost includes the cost of the pocket mask. It's is an eight-hour course, and both classes are required for certification. Republican secretary
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- State Sen. Bob Robbins of Greenville, R-50th was elected to another term as Republican caucus secretary. He handles all executive nominations submitted to the senate for approval. Part of his duty it to ensure all background information is received. He works with senators to deal with any concerns and coordinates a review of the nomination by the committees and full senate. Robbins was first elected to the state senate in 1990 and was most recently re-elected Nov. 7. He serves as vice chairman of the Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee. He also sits on banking and insurance, game and fisheries, local government and rules and executive nominations committees.
