In 1859, British naturalist Charles Darwin publishes "On the Origin of Species," which explains his theory of evolution. In 1944, during World War II, U.S. bombers based on Saipan attack Tokyo in the first raid against the Japanese capital by land-based planes. In 1950, the musical "Guys and Dolls," based on the writings of Damon Runyon and featuring songs by Frank Loesser, opens on Broadway. In 1971, hijacker "D.B. Cooper" parachutes from a Northwest Airlines 727 over Washington state with 200,000 in ransom -- his fate remains unknown. In 1985, the hijacking of an EgyptAir jetliner parked on the ground in Malta ends violently as Egyptian commandos storm the plane. The mother of a 14-year-old Youngstown boy who allowed him to drive without a license is fined 25 for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The boy was involved in a property damage accident at Dunlap and Mahoning Avenues.

J.H. Sheasley and R.R. Kegarise, both of Youngstown, leave East Liverpool in a 16-foot motorboat on the first leg of an endurance voyage down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans. The all-metal boat, Sea Eagle, was built in Salem.
