Steelhounds win first shootout at Centre, 4-3

Youngstown beat Corpus Christi for the first time in two seasons Wednesday.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown SteelHounds won their first shootout at the Chevrolet Centre this season, beating the Corpus Christi Rayz 4-3 Wednesday night.
It's Youngstown's first win over the Rayz in two seasons.
After a scoreless overtime period, it took the Hounds nine rounds of a shootout to finally get the game-winning goal from center Brad Patterson.
Both teams played a fundamentally sound first period, trading shots, trapping the puck into the neutral zone, and not allowing many offensive chances. The lone goal came from the SteelHounds as defensemen John Neal fired a shot from the blueline that beat Rayz goalie Ron Vogel, and gave the Hounds a 1-0 lead after the first period.
The Hounds took a 2-0 lead in the second period as John Wheaton was awarded a penalty shot after getting tripped near the goal crease. Wheaton fired his shot from the slot that deflected off the shoulder of Vogel for the two-goal advantage. The Rayz would get a goal back at the 12:52 mark as center Justin Quenneville shoved in a rebound on the powerplay to cut the Hounds lead to 2-1.
Rayz tie up contest
Corpus Christi would tie the knot at 2-2 in the third period, as Geno Parrish fired a slap shot from the point that beat Hounds goalie David Currie for the Rayz's second powerplay goal of the night. Youngstown would get a powerplay goal of its own from Tab Lardner, as he shot the puck through the five hole of Vogel to give the Hounds a 3-2 lead. The Rayz would even the game again at 3-3 as Jason Baird chipped in a rebound from Derrick McIver at the 10:26 mark of the period.
The Hounds edged the Rayz in shots on goal at 34-32, and Youngstown goalie David Currie stopped 29 of 32 shots and seven of nine chances in the shootout to earn his second victory of the season. Meanwhile, Rayz netminder Ron Vogel turned away 30 of 33 shots and six of nine in the shootout and suffered his fifth loss of the season.
