YOUNGSTOWN -- City firefighters are investigating a fire labeled as an arson set just after 6 a.m. Thursday at a vacant South Side home.
A fire department official said the house at 362 W. Delason Ave. was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. The house, valued at 8,700, was destroyed.
The siding on a neighboring occupied house melted from the heat coming from the vacant house. Part of the vacant structure also fell into the neighboring home causing about 1,500 in damage. Residents of the home are still able to stay in the house, the fire official said. Firefighters also extinguished a small fire at 30 E. Boston Ave. on Thursday afternoon. Firefighters said a child accidentally set a mattress on fire, causing 750 in damage.
Grief counseling
YOUNGSTOWN -- Catholic Charities Regional Agency is offering two grief counseling workshops geared to make the holidays less stressful. Workshops are free but reservations are requested. A session is planned from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Sts. Cyril & amp; Methodius School building, third floor, 175 Laird Ave., Warren. For reservations, call (330) 393-4254. Canfield holiday event
CANFIELD -- The second annual Lighting of the Green will be at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 2 on the Green. There will be entertainment, a live Nativity scene, free coffee, hot chocolate, doughnuts and, of course, Santa. The event, sponsored by several Canfield service organizations, is a kickoff for First Night, which will provide an array of entertainment on New Year's Eve in Canfield.
Army band to perform
NORTH LIMA -- The Ohio Army National Guard Band is scheduled to perform July 7 at the South Range High School Football Stadium, township officials announced. The 76-member band will perform a patriotic program. Admission is free. The time will be announced closer to the date of the concert. The 122nd Army Band has been appearing throughout Ohio for more than half a century. The band, the premier musical touring representatives for the Ohio National Guard, has earned the title Ohio's Musical Ambassadors.
Flu shots in Niles
NILES -- Appointments are not required for flu shots that will be given from 2 to 3:15 p.m. for five days beginning Monday at the city health department at city hall, 34 W. State St. Medicare, Medicaid and Anthem Senior Advocate identification cards are required. For all others, the cost is 15.
Christmas tree sale set
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Springfield Township Fire Department Station No. 21, 10720 Struthers Road, will have its annual Christmas tree sale beginning at 1 p.m. Dec. 2. Hours will continue from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday until all the trees are sold. The trees will be fresh cut and are locally grown. There will be five varieties -- Fraser fir, black hill spruce, blue spruce, balsam fir and Douglas fir. Proceeds from the sales will help the firefighters buy up-to-date equipment.
Health career workshop
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County One-Stop is offering a career exploration workshop, presented by the Northeast Ohio HealthForce, for people interested in careers in the health-care field. The workshop is 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the One-Stop Workforce Center, 149 Boardman-Canfield Road. Experts will present information covering six career clusters: Allied health, diagnostic, nursing, social work and counseling, therapist, and health information. Christmas in Struthers
STRUTHERS -- At 1 p.m. Dec. 9, the city will have "Christmas at Mauthe Park." City employees will donate their time to make sure the event is enjoyable for children. The mayor will read "The Night Before Christmas," and the Struthers High School Singers will sing carols. Santa will arrive by firetruck, and every child will go home with a treat.
