Send sunblock to the troops Saturday

YOUNGSTOWN — A campaign to send medical grade, oil-free, fragrance-free sunblock to American troops fighting in the war on terror is scheduled for 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Printz Mansion Bed and Breakfast, 1819 Fifth Ave.

The event, which includes a raffle, silent auction, hors d’oeuvres, beverages and entertainment, is sponsored by the “Sun Block for the Troops” organization, established in August 2004 by Linda M. Huffman of Youngstown.

She said proceeds help provide sunblock to members of the military. To date, some 1,500 bottles of sunblock have been mailed to 13 Marine, Army, Air Force, Navy, National Guard and reserve units.

She said exposure to the sun causes severe sunburn and extensive damage to the face, neck and hands of the troops. Some are coming home with various forms of skin cancer and disfiguring injuries caused by the sun, Huffman said.

A rhythm and blues vocalist; Terry Dodson and Carisma Band; The Old School Band with a New School Beat; and Dr. G (Greg Johnson) on keyboard will perform during the event.

There will also be a reception to honor military veterans and patriotic citizens who support them. The event is open to the public, and admission and a tour of the mansion are free.
