PBS show gives lowdownon new high-tech gadgets
KENT -- The holiday buzz has begun as the year's newest gadgets begin to appear in stores. To help shoppers learn more about the season's high-tech gifts -- including Nintendo's Wii (pronounced "wee") and Sony's PlayStation 3 -- PBS 45/49 will introduce "Hi-Tech Holiday Handbook," which premieres at 8 p.m. Tuesday. In this PBS 45/49 production, gadget guys Dave Kuhar and James Cotton, from The Media Cellar in Willoughby, visit three local stores to describe and evaluate the newest electronic gifts, including MP3 players, computers, digital cameras, camcorders, large-screen televisions and computer gaming systems. The stores they visit are B & amp;B Appliance in Cleveland, Dodd's Camera in Shaker Heights and Micro Center, based in Hilliard. "This show is a great way for viewers to gain an understanding about the newest high-tech items, especially those that are in great demand this year," said Duilio Mariola, PBS 45/49 producer. The program also will air at 5 a.m. Wednesday; 10 p.m. Dec. 1; 7 a.m. Dec. 2; 8 a.m. Dec. 3; and 2 p.m. Dec. 8.
Area artists exhibitionopens at the Butler
YOUNGSTOWN -- The opening reception for the 70th Area Artists Annual Exhibition will be 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Butler Institute of American Art, 524 Wick Ave. Light refreshments will be served by Winslow's Cafe at the Butler. The event is free but reservations are required; call (330) 743-1107, ext. 220. The Butler's 70th Area Artists Annual, a juried exhibition, features works in all media by artists who live within 40 miles of Youngstown. This year's exhibition was judged by New York artist and Youngstown native James Pernotto. This exhibition is on view through Dec. 30.
Fairy tale brunch for kidsreturns to Playhouse
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Playhouse Youth Theatre will present "A Cinderella Brunch," at noon Dec. 9, 16 and 23 in the theater's Moyer Room. The popular event returns after a sold-out run in 2005. Youngsters and their families can interact with Cinderella, the Stepsisters, the Wicked Stepmother, the Mice and all of the characters from the beloved fairy tale. The Fairy Godmother will record their wishes in her special Wish Book. They may try on the glass slipper and take a turn dancing with the handsome Prince Charming. Santa Claus will also be on hand with his elves. A Christmas buffet brunch will be served, including "smiley" potatoes, french toast sticks, sausages, scrambled eggs, muffins, cereal, fruit, milk, juice and coffee. Each child will receive a souvenir coloring book, and a Cinderella raffle basket will be on display. Tickets are 7 for children and 9 for adults.
