WARREN -- One of five Niles men arrested Oct. 28 when a wedding reception got out of hand has been found guilty of assault. Ryan F. Smith, 22, of West Third Street was found guilty Tuesday by municipal Judge Terry Ivanchak. He was placed on two years' probation and fined 750. A resisting arrest charge was dismissed. He and the others, including the groom, Robert J. Peyatt, 22, of Gilbert Street, will appear at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 16 on charges of assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. Peyatt also is charged with public indecency at the reception at Aulizio's Catering and Banquet Hall, 4395 Youngstown Road.
Rail crossing to close
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ohio Central Railroad crossing at East Indianola Avenue will be closed until Dec. 1 to allow the railroad to make repairs. Detours will be posted at the location.
Wilson heads to Harvard
U.S. Rep.-elect Charlie Wilson of St. Clairsville, D-6th, will attend a four-day conference next week at Harvard University designed to assist incoming members of Congress. The program is sponsored and organized by the Institute of Politics at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. The institute also pays for all expenses associated with the seminar.
The program begins Tuesday and runs through Dec. 1. Seminar topics include the politics of appropriations, terrorism, globalization and energy. The 12-county 6th District includes all of Columbiana and a portion of Mahoning.
Fatal Warren firestill investigated
WARREN -- Fire Chief Ken Nussle says it will be a week before it can be determined what caused a blaze Sunday in which Cindy Singelas was killed at her home at 3214 Aris St. N.W. Nussle said Tuesday that evidence at the scene has been sent to the state fire marshal's crime laboratory and witnesses are being interviewed. The test results will probably be available next week, the chief said. Firefighters found Singelas, 45, in a hallway of the one-story house. Asked if was an arson, Nussle responded, "We're not ruling out anything." A man who was in the house at the time, Frank Warzala, 62, is expected to be released today from Akron Children's Hospital. Nussle said the relationship between Singelas and Warzala isn't clear, but he is a person investigators want to interview.
Liquor option passes
LAKE MILTON -- Voters in Milton Precinct 2 approved a liquor option to permit the Sunday sale of wine and mixed beverages at Myrddin Winery, 3020 Scenic Ave. Voters approved the option 252-144. Results published Nov. 8 were incomplete and showed the option losing.
Pa. DMV offices to close
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- All driver's license and photo centers in Pennsylvania will be closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving. Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services online at www.dmv.state.pa.us, and there is no additional fee for using online services.
Hunting licenses
MERCER, Pa. -- The Mercer County treasurer's office will be available Saturday to provide hunting licenses for military personnel. Treasurer Virginia Steese Richardson will have the office staff available form 3 to 5 p.m. to accommodate members of the military unable to come to the office during regular hours. Charged in burglary
NILES -- Two Youngstown men have been charged with a burglary Tuesday morning. Richard Wilson, 21, of Richview Avenue, appeared in municipal court Tuesday on a charge of burglary, and Duwayne Neville, 26, of Oakwood Avenue, on a charge of complicity to burglary. Detective James Robbins said a neighbor of the Battles Avenue house here saw two men going in and out of the house and called police. Neville was arrested at the scene, and Wilson was apprehended about 45 minutes later walking along Salt Springs Road in Weathersfield Township. Neville posted a 7,500 bond, but Wilson remains jailed on a similar bond. Both will appear in court Nov. 29.
