Wednesday, November 22, 2006

YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning Valley Railroad Heritage Association will offer owners of antique steam whistles the chance to sound them from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the B & amp;0 Station parking lot, 530 Mahoning Avenue.
Hank Marsilio, a railroad heritage association trustee, said Youngstown Thermal and Eagle Mechanical will provide the means for owners of steam whistles to connect their whistles to a steam source and blow them for a 20 donation to the railroad heritage association.
Otherwise, there is no charge for the event, he said.
"Many people collect antique whistles and restore them, but may not have ever heard what they sound like," Marsilio said.
He said there will be some whistles from Youngstown steel mills, and whistle collectors from several states plan to attend.
