4th application for Girard landfill

GIRARD — City leaders may hope to place a park along the Mahoning River, but Total Waste Logistics continues its attempts to obtain a permit to open a demolition debris landfill on the same property.

The company has now submitted its application for the landfill for a fourth time to the city health department.

Total Waste originally took out an application for a license for the landfill from the city health department in June 2005. The company wants to locate a construction and demolition debris landfill at the site on the city’s north side.

The health board and the Columbus-based firm Bennett & Williams Environmental Consultants hired by the city rejected the application on each previous submission based on a number of deficiencies.

Mayor James Melfi said the firm had about 21 questions on the third application submission by the company. He said Total Waste Logistics addressed the questions, but most of those questions were not answered to the firm’s satisfaction.
