Company Grade Officer
Air Force 2nd Lt. Kara M. Hoppel was named the Company Grade Officer of the Quarter for the 2nd Mission Support Squadron, Barksdale Air Force Base, La., for the period of July 1 to Sept. 30, 2006. Hoppel is a 2001 graduate of Beaver Local High School, Lisbon, and a 2005 graduate of Miami University of Ohio, where she received her commission. Hoppel, a daughter of Jim and Bonnie Hoppel of East Liverpool, is her unit's chief relocation and employment officer.

Serving in Cuba
Navy Lt. Shayne O. Morris has arrived at the Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to serve as a member of Joint Task Force-GTMO in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Morris, the son of Harry O. and Dixie Morris of East Liverpool, is a 1989 graduate of Beaver Local High School, Lisbon.
BACK FROM IRAQ
864th Replacement Co.
OAKDALE, Pa. -- Soldiers from the 864th Replacement Co. returned to their home station at Charles E. Kelly Support Facility on Thursday. Soldiers from the unit served at Logistics Support Area Anaconda, near Balad, Iraq, for a year.
Specialist on leave
Army Specialist E-4 Daniel F. Hazen is home on leave after returning to the United States from Iraq, where he served with the 110th Military Police Co. guarding prisoners of war. The 110th is based at Fort Hood, Tex. Hazen, a 2003 graduate of Girard High School, is a son of Eleanor Hazen of Girard and Hans Hazen of Liberty.
VETERANS
Honoring Hispanics
YOUNGSTOWN -- Hispanic veterans from the Mahoning Valley from all branches of the service will be honored at the second annual Hispanic Veterans' Appreciation Dinner on Saturday at the Organizacion Civica y Cultural Hispana Americana Hall, 3660 Shirley Road. The event, sponsored by OCCHA, runs from 6 to 11 p.m.
The main speaker is Henry Guzman of Columbus, formerly of Youngstown, who is a founder and former executive director of OCCHA. Guzman served in the Army during the Vietnam War and received a Purple Heart.
Gus Guzman, no relation on Henry, co-chairman of the event, and Shorty Navarro, are the masters of ceremonies. The evening's activities include a special rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner," recognition of veterans and a remembrance for fallen comrades and prisoners of war. Music throughout the evening, and for dancing, will be provided by DJ Chico. All Hispanic veterans and the general public are invited to attend. Closing for holiday
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission, 2801 Market St., will close at 4 p.m. Wednesday and reopen at 8 a.m. Nov. 27. Also, the commission canceled its meeting scheduled for Nov. 29.
