Solid waste district plan to get second reading
McDONALD -- Village council gave a second reading this week to an ordinance to update the 2006 Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste District plan.
The plan calls for an increase in fees of 2 per ton for trash haulers with the money being used for the district's recycling program among other things, officials said, adding that the fee increase won't affect residents.
In September, the district sent the village a letter stating that officials had 90 days from Sept. 18 to pass the ordinance. Village officials expect to give the ordinance a third reading at their next meeting, set for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 6 in the administration building.
Gunman takes cigarettes
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A gunman took five packs of cigarettes from the Pennzmart 7-Eleven on Highland Avenue.
Police said the man went to the convenience store window and asked for a bag of tortilla chips and a candy bar at 1:16 a.m. Friday. When the clerk returned, the man had a handgun and demanded money.
There was no cash in the register, so the man asked for cigarettes, police said. The robber, described as about 5 feet 7 inches tall with a mustache or goatee, ran off, police said.
