Grove City is a 'Best Buy'
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Barron's Educational Series has called Grove City College a "Best Buy" in recognition of the college's quality education and affordable price. Grove City is included in the ninth edition of "Best Buys in College Education" guide, which is available in bookstores and online. Barron's chose 247 colleges and universities for its guide, using tuition rates and results from questionnaires filled out by deans and students to determine student satisfaction and educational quality. Earlier this year, Grove City was named No. 1 "Best Value" in its category by U.S. News & amp; World Report for the fifth year in a row.
Sharonsteel Scholar
SHARON, Pa. -- Edwin Flowers of Sharpsville is the 2006-07 recipient of the Sharonsteel Scholar award, a four-year, full-tuition grant to Penn State Shenango funded by the Sharonsteel Foundation. The grants are awarded annually. Flowers, a Sharpsville High School graduate, was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated in the top 10 of his class. He excelled in high school soccer and played baseball and ran track in high school. Flowers was also involved in his church youth group. In addition to school and church, he works with his father, Gary, in their family business. Flowers is the 11th person to receive the scholarship.
New assistant director
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown has appointed Joie Mozena as assistant director of Early Childhood Services to manage the day-to-day operations of the Infant and Toddler program. She has more than six years of experience working in the infant and toddler field, with two of those years in supervisory positions. She also has an Associate Certification in Child Development, with an Infant and Toddler Endorsement. She lives in Champion with her husband and two children.
The Jewish Community Center, a nonprofit program, provides comprehensive services to children.
Teams place in contest
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.-- Eleven teams from four area high schools recently took part in a High School Computer Programming Contest at Westminster College. Teams, consisting of three or four high school students, worked for two and a half hours on six computer programming problems. Students submitted solutions and received feedback from the judges electronically. First place went to The Presidential Sweet team of Sarah Lambert, Farhanah Sheets and Eric Saut from Blackhawk High School. Second place went to the Hogan's Heroes team of Greg Hogan, Joel Grover, Kevin Jeffries and Andrew Krepps of Greenville High School. Third place went to the Molto Bene team of Adam Mihalcin, Anthony Pulleo and Ben Rakestraw from Blackhawk High School.
Hair-a-thon scheduled
CANFIELD -- The senior cosmetology class at Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center will hold its annual Hair-a-thon from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday. Proceeds from the event, which coincides with the school's Parent-Teacher Conference Night, help defray expenses incurred by students taking the state cosmetology exam in Columbus. The Hair-a-thon will be held at the school's beauty salon at 7300 N. Palmyra Road and appointments are recommended. To make one, call the salon at (330) 729-4000, Ext. 1708. Services include haircuts, styling, perms/relaxers, hair coloring, facials, manicures and more. Costs range from 6 to 25, depending upon the service provided. All work is done by senior students under the licensed supervision of Linda Tomko, MCCTC cosmetology instructor.
Ursuline placement test
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ursuline High School will administer its placement test for all incoming freshmen from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 2 in the school cafeteria, 750 Wick Ave. There is no charge for the test, but parents must call the school office at (330) 744-4563 to reserve a place for their child. Students should bring two No. 2 pencils to the test. Placement in honors courses is based on successful completion of the entrance exam, and the awarding of certain academic scholarships is based on the test as well.
Official GED practice test
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center is offering the official GED practice test at no cost and on a walk-in basis from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 1 at the school at 7300 N. Palmyra Road. Southern Park Mall is offering the test from 4:30-7 p.m. Jan. 4. Qualified participants need to be at least 18 years old, not enrolled in high school and have an Ohio driver's license or an Ohio identification card. Passing the practice test qualifies participants to receive a fee waiver for the official GED test. For more information, call the school adult education office at (330) 729-4100.
