Bridge constructionon I-80 ramp delayed
AUSTINTOWN -- Work on bridge construction near the Interstate 80 westbound exit ramp to state Route 11 southbound had been delayed a week. The job was to have started Thursday. The work, which was to be completed July 8, now will be completed July 16. The detour will be I-80 westbound to Route 46 southbound to I-80 eastbound. The work is being done by Anthony Allega Cement Contractor of Independence.
Warren swears in a new city firefighter
WARREN -- Brett Anderson, 21, of Middlefield was sworn in as a city firefighter Thursday, bringing the department to its authorized strength of 75. He replaces Gary Smith, who resigned earlier this month. A graduate of Cardinal High School in Middlefield, Anderson has been an emergency medical technician with the Community Care Ambulance Network in the Middlefield area for two years. He is also a Middlefield volunteer firefighter. His father, Capt. Scott Anderson, is a firefighter at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station. Three new city police officers will be sworn in at 11 a.m. Tuesday at city hall. They are Arthur Carter of Youngstown, Michael Edwards Jr. of Warren and Seth Simpson of Niles.
Amer-I-Can in worksfor Youngstown youths
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jim Brown, a National Football League hall of famer, was to announce today he is bringing his Amer-I-Can program to the city. Amer-I-Can is a self-improvement and life skills training program, normally facilitated by gang members or ex-convicts, for the purpose of giving people the tools to better manage their lives and change their attitudes. The program provides life management skills training sessions and evaluation services for Youngstown kids at middle and high schools. Brown was to make the announcement in the mayor's office at city hall.
Tire recycling day
SHARON, Pa. -- The Shenango River Watchers group will host tire recycling from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday or until the truck is full at the Sharon City Center. There is a limit of 10 tires per vehicle, and the collection is limited to Mercer County residents only and no dealers. Proof of address is required. Tires may be left on the rims.
Watch birds or the stars
LISBON -- Weather permitting, two programs are scheduled for Saturday at Scenic Vista Park. A morning bird-watching hike will be led by Walter Sturgeon at 8:30 a.m. Participants should meet at the pavilion and bring their bird identification books and binoculars. The Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society members will have a night star watch Saturday evening.
Woman robbed of $200
BOARDMAN -- A Glenwood Avenue woman says she was robbed at gunpoint of $200 and two DVDs. The 20-year-old told police that she was walking from her car in the lot of her apartment building about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday when a man yelled for her to stop. As he approached, he pulled a handgun, grabbed her arm and demanded her money. She said the man pushed her to the ground and took her wallet and a bag that contained two recently purchased DVDs. He then fled through the Newport Glen apartment lot.
Transformer explodes
AUSTINTOWN -- A transformer exploded at Vinyl Source, 427 Thacher Lane. The explosion at 12:40 a.m. Thursday sent smoke throughout the building. About 15 employees had to be evacuated, said assistant fire chief Andrew Frost. Frost said a short in the main power supply caused the explosion; there were no injuries.
