Youngs leads Mathews to district title contest

EASTLAKE -- Caitlyn Youngs pitched a four-hitter, striking out nine and walking two to lead the Mathews High softball team, which defeated Cornerstone Christian in a Division IV district semifinal at Eastlake North High School.
The Mustangs (20-3) will meet Kirtland today at 4:30 p.m. Kirtland defeated Bristol 4-3 in 10 innings in the other semifinal.
Trailing 1-0, the Mustangs scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings, then put the game away with three runs in the seventh.
Alyssa DeJean led off with a walk and scored on a double by Jessie Hall. Amber Jarvis singled to score Hall, then stole second and scored on a single by Laura Wise. Wise had two hits.
Lexi Adamo had two hits for Cornerstone (16-5) and Dana Selle struck out eight and walked two in the defeat.
Regular season
BERLIN CENTER -- Kelcie Herberger and fifth-inning reliever Colleen Courtney combined to pitch a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead Mooney (22-6) to a 4-0 win over Western Reserve.
Herberger (8-0) and Courtney each had five strikeouts.
DiAndra Dibacco led Mooney's offensive attack with two singles and two RBIs.
Stevie Banks took the loss for Western Reserve (21-6).
Erika Goddard had a single for the Blue Devils' only hit.
