In 1643, delegates from four New England colonies meet in Boston to form a confederation. In 1935, T.E. Lawrence, also known as "Lawrence of Arabia," dies in Dorset, England, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash. In 1943, in an address to the U.S. Congress, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill pledges his country's full support in the war against Japan. In 1958, the United States and Canada formally establish the North American Air Defense Command.
May 19, 1981: Unions representing Youngstown's police and firefighters open a campaign for a half-percent increase in the city's income tax, with proceeds earmarked for safety forces.
Almost 80 percent of the patients being admitted to Woodside Receiving Hospital have been admitted to a mental hospital before. The increasing readmissions reflect a trend in the state toward deinstitutionalization‚ attempting to treat patients in the least restrictive environment.

May 19, 1966: Two 18-year-old South Side youths escape serious injury when their small outboard motorboat is swamped and swept over the Lake Newport Dam in Mill Creek Park. George Gasper rode the boat over the dam and received a severe cut on the thigh; Charles Smith jumped before boat was over and was treated for the effects of spending time in the icy lake waters.

May 19, 1956: More than 500 members of the Warren area's 16 Junior Achievement companies attend the fourth annual banquet at Packard Music Hall. Outstanding members who were honored with scholarships were Tim Strader, Jack Hading, Sue Abrams, Robert Hollis, Robert Gojdies and Vince Ragazzo.
Youngstown Mayor Frank X. Kryzan unleashes a bitter personal attack on Dr. Ralph E. Dwork, state health director, who characterized the Mahoning River as the most polluted stream in the state. Kryzan said Dwork is an "off-the-cuff spouter" and "typical bureaucrat" who is willing to slander the Mahoning Valley community.
Two Youngstown area men and a dog drop 70 feet over the flooded Lake Milton dam and survive. Frank Sanford, 69, of Lake Milton is in St. Joseph Hospital with a possible fracture of the spine. Karl Kahn, 28, of Edinburg, was uninjured.
