SounDoctrine is finalist
Youngstown-based alternative jazz funk band SounDoctrine is one of six finalists chosen to compete in the 14th annual Capital Jazz Challenge in Columbia, Md., on June 3. The winning group receives $5,000 and will perform a 30-minute set on the main stage at the Capital Jazz Fest on June 4. Jazz stars performing in the festival include Fourplay, Will Downing, Angie Stone, Kem, Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright and Will Downing.
"We're very humbled, and we praise the Lord!" said Jere B, the band's drummer and producer.
SounDoctrine's new album, "Endurance," will be released Tuesday. It will be available online at CDBaby.com and at all Borders and Barnes & amp; Noble locations.
YSU art exhibit
YOUNGSTOWN -- An exhibit of the work of 20 graduating Youngstown State University art students will be on display at the McDonough Museum of Art through May 19. The artwork includes various media such as painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, printmaking, digital media and graphic design.
The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Wednesdays until 8 p.m. The museum is open to the public and admission is free.
Asian Film Festival
PITTSBURGH -- Silk Screen Asian Film Festival, a multiple-day international film festival premiering in Pittsburgh from Friday through May 20, will showcase more than 20 feature films. Silk Screen is the first Asian American Film Festival in Pittsburgh. The festival will screen feature films at three locations:Regent Square Theater, Harris Theater and Melwood Screening Room. Tickets are $8 at the box office. A $50 multi-screening pass is good for eight films. Multi-Screening Passes are only available on the Web site: www.silkscreenfestival.org.
Isaiah Jackson on radio
YOUNGSTOWN -- WYSU, 88.5-FM, is broadcasting a series of interviews that Isaiah Jackson, outgoing director of the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, gave to Radio New Zealand. The first part of the interview aired last week. Part two airs Monday at 7:30 p.m., and the final part airs May 15 at 7:30 p.m.
Flashback in dance
YOUNGSTOWN -- Flashback, a dance show, will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. May 20 at St. Rose of Lima Church, 50 Struthers-Coitsville Road (Route 616, south of U.S. route 422). The show will include contests for the best-dressed person wearing clothes from the '50s through '80s and a twist contest. For information, call (330) 519-9678.
Slovak kids folk group
CAMPBELL -- Saris, a world-touring children's folk ensemble from Presov, Slovakia, will perform at 7 p.m. May 23 at St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church social hall, 463 Robinson Road. Poetry reading is moved
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Pig Iron Literary & amp; Art Works and Cedar's Caf & eacute; have agreed to discontinue the Second Tuesday Open Poetry Reading series at the Cedar's Restaurant.
The Pig Iron Literary & amp; Art Works will hold the May reading at the Old Precinct Delicatessen, 32 N. Phelps St., downtown, at 8 p.m. Location of the gathering of poets will be announced from month to month.
