YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown YWCA is sponsoring its 12th annual Young Women with Bright Futures awards banquet today, honoring 27 local high school seniors for their commitment in serving their schools, communities and families.
The event starts at 10 a.m at Holiday Inn in Boardman.
The honorees were selected by their teachers and administrators for excellence in scholarship and leadership. The honorees were then eligible to enter an essay contest for a cash prize. This year's topic was "The Elimination of Racism and the Empowerment of Women," and Sarah Newland of Boardman is the winner.
Chairwoman of this year's event is Stephanie Hunter of Canfield. Jo Ann Ellis of Struthers is the co-chairwoman.
