SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
Targeted group or field
Here are some specialty scholarships that target an ethnic group or a particular field of study.
Dayton Association for Young Children: DAYC offers two scholarships for studying early-childhood education. The DAYC Scholarship of $500 is available to students pursuing a bachelor's, master's or doctorate. Applications are considered on the basis of academic achievement, a minimum of 30 credit hours completed, a minimum GPA of 3.0, extracurricular involvement (particularly in the field of ECE), and confidential references and recommendations. Applications may be downloaded at the DAYC Website at www.daytonayc.org. May 15 is the filing deadline.
The Clara McGlone Scholarship was established for Sinclair College and the Child and Family Education Office at Sinclair. The requirements are the same as for the DAYC Scholarship except that a minimum of 18 credit hours is required. Scholarship applications are available from the Sinclair Community College Financial Aid Office, and May 15 is the filing deadline.
Project EverGreen: Two students in a "green industry" related field will be awarded $2,500 scholarships from the new Project EverGreen Because Green Matters Scholarship Program. The scholarships are open to undergraduate college students pursuing a career in the green industry and will be given in 2006. To qualify, students must major or minor in a green industry-related field such as horticulture, plant sciences, botany, agronomy, plant pathology or water management. Eligibility, as determined by a Project EverGreen committee, extends to two- and four-year program students attending institutions that offer turf, landscape and golf management curriculums. Applications are due June 1 and may be downloaded from www.projectevergreen.com.
Mahoning County Bar Association: The Mahoning County Bar Association Foundation is accepting applications for law school scholarships. In addition to the General Scholarship, there are also scholarships in memory of Attys. Irwin Kretzer, Theodore T. Macejko Sr. and Harlan Small. This year, there will be an additional scholarship from Sky Bank. Applications are available by contacting the bar association at (330) 746-2933, by e-mail at mcarroll@mahoningbar.org or by calling Dr. William C. Binning at Youngstown State University at (330) 941-3436. Recipients will be recognized at a June 26 banquet.
National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs: The Youngstown Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs Inc. is offering a $500 scholarship to assist a minority female student from the Youngstown-Warren area who plans to attend college or an accredited business school. Applications are available from high school guidance counselors, and the filing deadline is May 8.
Austintown Growth Foundation: The foundation will present its 14th annual $500 scholarship to a 2006 Austintown Fitch High School graduate. Applicants must write a 500-word essay on the topic, "My Vision for Austintown's Future Is ..." Essays must be submitted by April 14 to the Austintown Growth Foundation, Attention Scholarship Committee, 225 Idaho Road, Austintown, Ohio 44515. All entries must be typed, double-spaced and include the student's name, address and telephone number.
