Professor wins honor
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Dr. William Evans, associate professor of education at Westminster College, was named "Counselor Educator of the Year" by the Pennsylvania School Counselors Association (PSCA). Evans, who has been with Westminster since 2001, earned his undergraduate degree from the Pennsylvania State University, his master's from Youngstown State University, and hisdoctorate from Kent State University. He also has board certification as a nationally certified counselor and was granted the professional counselor license by Pennsylvania.
Artwork in state contest
HUBBARD -- Seven Hubbard High School art students have sent their work to Columbus to be judged in state-level competition. Rachelle Lee, Steve Protheroe, Stephanie Steele, Katherine Ellis, Ashley Helmick, Shelby Sarisky and Asia Owens received awards in the regional Governor's Art Competition. Their work will be among about 2,500 pieces of art from Ohio's 15 regional competitions. The award ceremony is April 9. That pool of 2,500 will be narrowed to 300 to be displayed at the exhibition, and then 25 pieces will receive the Governor's Award of Excellence, says the Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition Web site. In the local Scholastic Art Show, Katherine, Corrie and Rachelle received high honors for their work.
School taking applications
YOUNGSTOWN -- Applications are now available for the Mollie Kessler School for 2006-07 by calling (330) 746-3095. The charter school at 118 E. Wood St. offers classes for first through eighth grade for children deemed to be at risk of failing because of academic learning difficulties. Open enrollment will run from Monday to April 13. Parent interviews and review of school records will run from May 8 to May 19. Final notice to parents will be June 8.
SRU official appointed
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Dr. Constance Foley has been appointed vice president for student life at Slippery Rock University effective July 1. She was assistant vice president for student affairs at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla., for the past eight years, where she helped direct strategic planning for the development of the campus including new housing construction and a major renovation of the student union. She holds a doctorate from Arizona State University, a master's from Syracuse University and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Michigan. She also has held positions at Kent State University and the University of San Francisco. She replaces Dr. Robert J. Watson, who is retiring March 31 after 34 years of service to Slippery Rock University. He has been vice president for student life since 2001.
NPR reporter to speak
SHARON, Pa. -- Nina Totenberg, National Public Radio's award-winning legal affairs correspondent, will speak on "The Supreme Court and its Impact on You" on April 4 as the Sixth Greenberger Family Memorial Lecturer at Penn State Shenango. The program is set for 7 p.m. in the campus auditorium at 148 Shenango Ave. The event is free and open to the public. Totenberg's name became known in 1991 when she interviewed Anita Hill, the University of Oklahoma law professor who leveled sexual harassment charges against then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. Her reports and coverage of the ensuing hearings won NPR the Peabody Award. In 1987, she had reported that nominee Douglas Ginsburg had once been a marijuana smoker. Ginsburg quickly withdrew his nomination, and Totenberg won the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Silver Baton for her coverage.
Teleconference planned
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College will host the Hospice Foundation of America's 13th annual "Living with Grief" teleconference live, via satellite, at 1 p.m. April 5 in the Maple Room of McKelvey Campus Center. "Pain Management at the End of Life: Bridging the Gap Between Knowledge and Practice" offers a panel of experts who will discuss laws and regulations governing the practice of pain management. The program is free and open to the public. Continuing education contact hours will be available for nurses, social workers, counselors and other health-care workers for $25. Helping Katrina victims
AKRON -- About 150 University of Akron students planned to leave campus as a group today, headed for Pass Christian, Miss., to work on Hurricane Katrina relief projects. They'll do a variety of tasks such as providing meals, roofing, hanging drywall, building storage sheds, removing debris and perhaps assisting with day care or tutoring children, spokesmen said. The students had fund-raisers to pay for the trip. They will return to campus next Saturday.
