Indoor race to be held this weekend in Sharon



The local association has finalized its schedule of races for 2006.
SHARON, Pa. -- The Western Pennsylvania Soap Box Derby Association will sponsor an indoor race Saturday and Sunday at the Penn-Ohio Industrial Complex.
Racing will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the complex, which is just off Budd Street, west of the Shenango Valley Freeway. Seventy-five racers from several states are expected to participate.
Also, an Olympic bobsled and midget race car will be on display. Admission is free.
2006 schedule
The association recently announced its 2006 race schedule. The season is headlined by the New Castle All-American local qualifying race.
The race winner in both the Stock and Super Stock divisions qualifies for the All-American Soap Box Derby, scheduled for July 22 at Derby Downs in Akron.
The New Castle Soap Box Derby is the home of 2003 World Stock champion Nick Sibeto and 2004 World Rally Super Stock runner-up Kyle Bair. The local qualifying race is scheduled for June 17 at Scotland Meadows Park in Union Township.
The second annual SuperKids qualifying race in New Castle also will be June 17 and will feature local racers who are physically unable to compete individually in the All-American qualifier. The SuperKids local race winner will compete in the World SuperKids Finals at Derby Downs in early August.

Full rally schedule
The Western Pa. SBD will also sanction a full rally schedule for the fourth consecutive year. The Spring Rally is scheduled for April 29-30 at Scotland Meadows Park. The Fall Race, also set for Scotland Meadows, will be held in early September. Racers from several states are expected to participate in the rally races.

The Western Pennsylvania Soap Box Derby Association is the sanctioning body for All-American Soap Box Derby races in Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties.
