Manager, son charged in McDonald's theft

Friday, March 17, 2006

AUSTINTOWN -- A manager at a McDonald's on North Niles-Canfield Road and her son are charged in the theft of money from the restaurant.
Austintown Detective Sgt. Dan Kosco said Karen Shelley, 47, of Park Avenue in Girard, is charged with complicity to robbery and falsification for a police report she filed Jan. 27.
Her son, Donald F., 22, is charged with grand theft.
Karen Shelley told police Jan. 27 that she was taking three deposit bags from the restaurant to the night deposit box at National City Bank at 4949 Mahoning Ave. She said she was getting out of her car and was pushed by a man wearing a sweat shirt hood backward with eye holes cut into it. He grabbed the bags and ran, she told police.
Kosco said Thursday that tips led police to charge Shelley and her son, of the same Girard address. He said police believe they staged the robbery, and that the hooded man was actually Donald Shelley.
Donald Shelley was arrested Tuesday by Weathersfield Police and turned over to Austintown. He is to appear in Mahoning County Court in Austintown for a preliminary hearing March 22.
Karen Shelley, also wanted on a warrant, turned herself in Tuesday at the Austintown police station. Her case is set for a pretrial April 10.
Kosco said McDonald's will not divulge how much money was stolen.
