Head-on crash kills man
GREEN -- An Austintown man died in a head-on car crash on U.S. Route 62, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Michael L. Fox, 22, of Calvacade Drive was northbound in a car at 12:01 a.m. Sunday when the accident occurred. Michael A. Zimbardi Jr., 20, of Forest Park in Boardman, who was traveling southbound, lost control of his car, which hit Fox's car head-on, the patrol said. Fox was pronounced dead at the scene. Zimbardi was taken to Salem Community Hospital, an OSHP dispatcher said; a nurse said Zimbardi wasn't admitted there. The crash is under investigation and no charges have been filed.
Woman charged in assault
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police say a 24-year-old Youngstown woman faces a charge of felonious assault after she attacked her child's father with an iron and a knife. Police said Angela Chico of North Garland Avenue attacked the Youngstown man shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday. She hit the man in the face with an iron and stabbed him in the left hand, officers said. He was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for a swollen jaw, multiple scratches on his face and a cut to the back side of his hand near the thumb that required stitches. Chico was taken to the Mahoning County jail.
Spending plan approved
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The New Castle Area School District has approved a $40.6 million spending plan, with no property tax increase. The school board recently finalized the 2006-07 budget. Property taxes will remain at 17.27 mills. The per capita tax, which city and Taylor Township residents pay, will be $15. Workers in the city and Taylor Township will be assessed a half-percent wage and income tax.
New meeting time
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Beginning with its July 14 meeting, the city's steering committee for the development of the comprehensive plan and zoning ordinance and map will convene at 5 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month in council chambers at the city building at 230 N. Jefferson St. Those sessions previously started at 7 p.m.
Request for used books
MONACA, Pa. -- Penn State Beaver Adult Literacy Action is seeking gently used paperback books for a reading project at Beaver County Jail. The organization has developed a book cart library for jail inmates and is requesting used paperbacks. Hardback books and books by romance authors won't be accepted. Books featuring action, espionage, spy thrillers and courtroom dramas are requested. Books can be delivered to the ALA office, 336 College Ave., Beaver, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
