Here's information on Salem's ongoing bicentennial and related events. For more information, visit the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce's Web site at www.salemohiochamber.org:
Today: Don Burns Orchestra, 6-8 p.m. Concert in the Park; presentation of Bicentennial Queen and her Court, both at Waterworth Memorial Park, 7 p.m.
Items from the 1956 of the time capsule will be on display in for the first time at the Salem Historical Society's Museum meeting room from 1-4 p.m. There will be no charge, but the museum will be open for those who want a tour. The exhibit will continue through July. The exhibit can also be viewed from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays and Wednesdays or by appointment by calling (330) 337-8514.
The Salem Bicentennial Steering committee has adopted criteria for items for the Bicentennial Time Capsule to be buried in the library's front lawn Sept. 23 as part of Heritage Day. The capsule will be opened in 2056. The committee said items should "be representative of Salem today, capturing the spirit of our community for future generations." The committee has adopted rules to protect items. Forms to propose items for the capsule are available at the chamber, library and society.
Friday: Red, White & amp; Blue Grande Ball, B.P.O. Elks Lodge #305, 824 E. State St. Ticket is required 7 p.m. to midnight; highlights will include discussion of Salem's history and the auction of the "Bicentennial Jewel," a one-of-a-kind piece designed by Master Goldsmith Barbara Gillis of Gillis Studios.
Patterson Webb Blues Band, Italian Club, 250 Penn Ave. 9 p.m. to midnight.
Saturday: Opening ceremonies with patriotic band and fireworks, 8 p.m., Waterworth Park.
