Shooters take honors
Each year, the National Rifle Association conducts a variety of Postal Matches on the national level. These are matches at which competitors fire on their home ranges using targets that have been marked for identification. The fired targets are then sent to the NRA for scoring and ranking for awards.
Results of the 2006 National Junior Team Postal Matches have been announced, and the Cougars Junior Rifle team has taken national honors. Gina Cheliras of Hubbard took first place in the Four Position Postal Matches in January, and Ethan Skidmore of Canfield claimed second. Cheliras also took second place in the February match. A total of 61 juniors participated in the postal.
In the Three Position Postal Matches, the team took the first seven places in the December and February matches with Cheliras winning first place in each match and Skidmore taking second. The team also took the first four places in the January and March matches with Rob Mokri of Kinsman first in January and Cheliras second and Skidmore in first in March with Cheliras second.
Team awards, based on the combined scores of the four matches, saw the Cougars taking third place in the Four Position match, and first place in the Three Position Club team awards.
The team is sponsored by the Fish and Game Club of Vienna and Explorer Post 4840 of the Boy Scouts of America. Team members, between the ages of 12 and 18, compete on the local, state and national levels. Their coaches are Russ Evans of Hubbard, Art Phillips of Girard, Rodney Hawkins of Liberty and Butch Miles of Youngstown.

Limited camping
MARIENVILLE, Pa. -- The Marienville Ranger District of the Allegheny National Forest is reminding ATV riders who are camping at the Timberline ATV Trailhead that camping is permitted only in those areas posted for overnight camping. Please use the restroom facility and pack out all of your garbage. These camping restrictions are designed to protect natural resources and the health and safety of forest visitors.
Private campgrounds with direct trail access for ATV riders are available at the Timber Campground near the Russell City Store on state Route 66 south of Kane and the Forest Lodge & amp; Campground near Pigeon on state Route 66 north of Marienville.
These new guidelines will help the trailhead continue to be a first-class facility for ATV riders.
Temporary closure
BRADFORD, Pa. -- District Ranger John Schultz closed the Red Bridge Recreation Area effective June 13 in response to a water supply inspection. "Public safety is our primary consideration, and we apologize for the inconvenience," said Schultz. "This facility will be closed until the Department of Environmental Protection certifies that safe, potable water is continuously provided to Red Bridge Recreation Area."
Forest Service Recreation Area water supplies are sampled every month and sent to an approved lab for analysis to ensure safe potable water is delivered. The Forest Service is working with the contractor to clean and sanitize the storage tank and distribution system to quickly remedy this issue.
Camping is available at nearby Kiasutha and Dewdrop Recreation Areas, also on the Allegheny Reservoir.
The public will be notified when the Red Bridge Recreation Area is again open for public use.

Tree guides availablefrom Arbor Day foundation
With hundreds of different species of trees growing in Ohio and throughout the Eastern and Central regions of the U.S., the average person might be hard-pressed to recognize and name more than just a handful.
"What Tree is That?," a unique 72-page pocket guide available from the National Arbor Day Foundation, makes this detective work fun and easy by showing how to identify trees in a simple, step-by-step process.
Popular trees such as oaks, maples, firs and pines are covered, but the guide also goes beyond these familiar species to include the lesser-known horsechestnut and mockernut hickory, sassafras, shadbush, persimmon, pawpaw, pagodatree and pecan.
