MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township trustees said Tuesday there are no plans to eliminate the township's police force.
Trustee Fred Bobovnyk said that he has heard a private individual in the township has been pursuing the idea of having the county sheriff patrol the township. He added the individual has talked to county officials about it.
He also said that the police department will stay "as long as we can afford it." He added that he believes that the township needs to pass a police levy in the fall.
Zoning commission Chairman Richard Harkins had asked trustees if the rumor that the department was on its way out were true during citizens comments at Tuesday's trustees meeting, and all three trustees said no.
Chairman John Vogel said the department would be there as long as he is on the board.
Officials also announced that Walgreens drugstore has applied for a zoning permit for a new store on the northeast corner of U.S. Route 422 and Tibbets-Wick Road in McKinley Heights.
Feud arises
Vogel also heard Harkins and Zoning Commission member Fred McCandless comment about Vogel's saying he wanted to oust the two from the zoning commission.
McCandless said, "I really feel you have denigrated the township zoning commission, and I resent it." He asked for a formal apology, and Vogel flatly denied one.
Vogel also said that he was critical of the commission for not moving on legislation he had suggested to create rules for discarding or storing demolition debris.
McCandless said the commission didn't use Vogel's idea because he had not put it in the proper format.
Harkins and Vogel renewed their feud and when one asked township Solicitor William Roux a question regarding it; Roux advised both men to drop the matter.
"I suggest you don't discuss this any further," Atty. Roux said.
