Nationals climb out of a 9-2 hole to overthrow Yankees, 11-9

Washington scored the go-ahead run in the eighth.
ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON -- Daryle Ward lumbered around the bases to score the go-ahead run on Jose Guillen's eighth-inning triple, and the Washington Nationals overcame a seven-run deficit Saturday to beat the New York Yankees 11-9.
The Nationals trailed 9-2 after the Yankees' seven-run fifth inning, which included Johnny Damon's second grand slam of the year. But four runs in the fifth, two in the seventh and three in the eighth kept New York from winning in what was threatening to become a new home-away-from home for the Yankees.
It was the first time the Yankees lost after having a seven-run lead since a 10-7 defeat at Cleveland on July 14, 2002, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

ATLANTA -- David Ortiz and Kevin Youkilis each hit solo home runs to power Boston over Atlanta.
Boston starter Josh Beckett (8-3) went six innings, allowing three hits and two walks with five strikeouts. He also had an RBI single in the fourth, helping send the Braves to their season-high sixth straight loss. Jonathan Papelbon worked a perfect ninth inning for his 22nd save in 23 chances.
Atlanta, which has won a record 14 straight division titles, lost for the 16th time in 19 games and fell to 30-39. The Braves haven't been that far under .500 since the end of the 1990 season, when they finished 67-95 and 26 games back.
Youkilis homered to lead off the game, and Ortiz had an RBI double in a two-run third off Braves starter Lance Courmier (2-2). Ortiz, who scored on Trot Nixon's single, added his 19th homer and AL-leading 59th RBI to start the fifth off Mike Remlinger, giving the Red Sox a 5-1 lead.

SEATTLE -- Richie Sexson and Raul Ibanez each homered and Gil Meche held Barry Bonds without a home run.
Bonds had a seventh-inning double after grounding out and lining out against Meche. The sore-legged slugger jogged to second base on his double, but didn't limp as much as he did Friday night while chasing down a fly ball in left-center field.
He had homered in each of his previous two games to get within 37 home runs of Hank Aaron's major league record. Todd Greene pinch-hit for Bonds in the ninth.
Meche (7-4) tossed his first complete game since a 2-0 win over Boston on Sept. 12, 2004.
Jason Schmidt (6-3) had his first subpar start in nearly two months, allowing a season-high six runs and nine hits in 61/3 innings.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Dallas McPherson hit an inside-the-park homer to drive in the go-ahead runs and Ervin Santana pitched six strong innings for Los Angeles.
Garret Anderson homered off Jake Peavy (4-8) with one out in the sixth to tie the score 1-1, and one out later, Juan Rivera was hit by a pitch. McPherson then sliced an 0-1 pitch down the left field line, with Dave Roberts making a sliding attempt to catch it. The ball went off Roberts' glove and he slammed awkwardly into the fence, banging his right knee. The ball bounced away, and McPherson circled the bases while Roberts was lying on the ground, unable to get up.

Tigers 9, Cubs 3
CHICAGO -- Carlos Guillen, Magglio Ordonez and Placido Polanco had three hits apiece to lead Detroit to its eighth victory in 10 games.
Guillen had three RBIs with two-run homer in the first and a run-scoring double in the ninth. Polanco scored three runs and drove in one, and Ordonez had two doubles, two RBIs and scored twice.
Justin Verlander (8-4) allowed nine hits but just one run in 52/3 innings for his first victory since May 27. He was 0-1 with two no-decisions in June after going 4-1 and earning AL Rookie of the Month honors in May.
The Tigers struck early against rookie Carlos Marmol (1-1). Curtis Granderson led off the game with a triple to the right-field corner, drawing a boisterous "Let's go Tigers!" chant from the visiting fans. He scored on Polanco's single to center. With two out, Guillen drilled a 1-0 pitch to the seats in right for his eighth homer and a 3-0 lead.
