Gospel concert scheduled
YOUNGSTOWN -- Phillips Memorial Baptist Church, 1407 Victor Ave., will present the Lyric Supremes of Columbus in concert at 4 p.m. June 11. Tickets are $8 and children younger than 12 will be admitted free. Call (330) 743-8792. The event is a youth fundraiser for Kingdom Conference 2006.
Family, friends weekend
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Family Worship Center, 1731 Belmont Ave., will host a family and friends weekend to celebrate nine years of ministry. Programs planned are: Elder Emmett Nevels of Nevel Temple at 7 p.m. Thursday; Elder Michael Scott of New Galilee Church of God in Christ, Pastor Annie Henry of Revelation House of Prayer and Pastor Morris Lampley of Greater St. John Church of God in Christ in Warren at 7 p.m. Friday; fellowship picnic from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 10 at Chestnut Hill Pavilion at Mill Creek Park; and Bishop John L. Eldridge at 11 a.m. June 11 at the center.
Rosary cenacle
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Shrine of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted, 517 S. Belle Vista Ave., and the Queen of the Holy Rosary Prayer Group will hold a rosary cenacle at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The rosary will be recited during the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Refreshments will follow.
Polka Mass planned
CAMPBELL -- St. Joseph the Provider Catholic Church, 633 Porter Ave., will host a polka Mass at 11:15 a.m. Sunday in a tent outdoors as part of the parish festival. Del Rezek will play music.
'Da Vinci' discussion
GIRARD -- An open discussion on the Christian response to "The Da Vinci Code" is planned for Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of Girard, 890 Church-Hill Road. Questions to be discussed include: "What is the best way for the church to respond to events in the popular culture that put forth misleading claims about Christianity?" "Should we boycott the film?" "Is the best approach to define what we stand against or what we stand for?" A potluck supper is planned at 5 p.m. and the discussion at 6. For information, call (330) 505-1192.
Unity Day event
YOUNGSTOWN -- Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 505 Parkcliffe Ave., will celebrate its Men and Women Unity Day during the service at 10:45 a.m. Sunday. Minister Sonja A. Williams, associate minister of Calvary Ministries International and the wife of Mayor Jay Williams, will present the message.
The event will conclude with a service at 3:30 p.m. The Rev. Julius T. Davis Jr. and the fellowship of Friendship Baptist Church in Girard will be special guests. The Rev. Mr. Davis is co-chairman of the Greater Youngstown Community of Christians and second vice president of the Baptist Pastors' Council. Also participating will be R. Shanelle, who has a poetic spoken word and music ministry.
Celebrating new ministry
BOARDMAN -- Gary Selby will be installed as the new organist and choirmaster at 10 a.m. Sunday at St. James Episcopal Church. The celebration of a new ministry will mark Pentecost Sunday, when the Holy Spirit filled the disciples for their new ministries. Selby also serves St. Augustine Episcopal Church in Youngstown.
Pastor installation
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Rev. Stanford D. Murphy of Akron will be installed as the new pastor of Christian Bible Baptist Church, 2369 Oak St. Ext., during a service at 4 p.m. June 11.
The Rev. Mr. Murphy is a theology student at Temple Bible College and Seminary in Cleveland and an English major at the University of Akron. He and his wife, the former Connie Terrell, have three children.
Mr. Murphy had served as a minister at Shiloh Baptist Church in Akron.
88th anniversary
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 88th anniversary of New Hope Baptist Church, 437 Albert St., will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. June 11. The Rev. Charles Davidson of Town Creek Missionary Baptist Church, West Point, Miss., will be the guest.
Ordination celebrations
BOARDMAN -- Three pastors associated with Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Drive, will mark anniversaries of their ordinations Sunday. They are the Rev. Bret Rizzo, senior pastor, who is marking 15 years of ordination; the Rev. Paul Burgeson, who is retired but serves as visitation pastor, 40 years of ordination; and the Rev. Wayne Niemi, retired, 53 years. Judy Hosheck, assistant to the bishop, will preach at 8:30 and 11 a.m. services. A reception with a light lunch will follow.
Observing Women's Day
YOUNGSTOWN -- Women's Day will be observed at the 10:45 a.m. service Sunday at Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, 7 S. Garland Ave. Lynn Phillips of L.E. Black and Phillips Funeral Home will be guest speaker.
Confirmation ceremony
BOARDMAN -- The joint El Emeth-Ohev Tzedek Religious School confirmation is planned at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Congregation Ohev Tzedek, 5245 Glenwood Ave. Class members Suzanne Davis, Samantha Melendez, Hayley Sabo, Samuel Schonberger, Jaclyn Silverman, Samuel Silverman, Ben Stoyak and Ron Zoldan, will present views on the theme, "What the World Needs to Be." A social time, hosted by their parents, will follow.
