HOWLAND -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol said a 25-year-old Warren woman was killed in a traffic accident Saturday on state Route 46. The patrol said Sunday that Melissa Witherow lost control of her car, traveled off the right side of the road and hit several brick fence posts. The patrol said Witherow, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the crash site. Her passenger, Robert Dickey, 24, of Warren was seriously injured, the patrol said. He was in stable condition late Sunday at St. Joseph Health Center, a spokeswoman there said. The patrol said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, which is still under investigation.
National Night Out
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Springfield Board of Education members will be available to answer public questions during National Night Out festivities Aug. 1. Board members announced the district intends to set up a table at the event where they will provide information and answer questions about proposed building plans and renovations and other school-related matters. National Night Out will be from 7 to 10 p.m. in New Middletown. Activities include a parade and fireworks display. National Night Out is an annual crime and drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch.
Federal jobs grant
LISBON -- The Columbiana County Department of Job and Family Services has received a $103,000 federal grant that will fund two programs, said Eileen Dray-Bardon, the agency's director. Dray-Bardon said $80,000 will go to pay a $1,000 bonus to a needy person who gets a job and to the person's employer. The bonuses will be given if the person completes the employer's probationary period. She said $10,000 will be used for administrative costs and $13,000 will be given to the Family Recovery Center for a program to help all family members in homes with domestic violence.
Dog warden retirement
LISBON -- Columbiana County Dog Warden Barbara Derringer has announced she will retire effective Sept. 1 after 21 years in the post. Derringer was hired to work at the county dog pound in 1982 and was named dog warden in 1985. There are three positions for workers at the dog pound, west of Lisbon. One of those positions is vacant.
Getting rid of old tires
McDONALD -- The village will collect old tires from July 31 through Aug. 13. Village residents can drop off their tires at the village garage on Second Stret. There will be curbside pickup for tires only on July 31 and Aug. 7, village officials said.
