YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley Historical Society's traveling exhibit celebrating the 80th Anniversary of Commercial Broadcasting in the Mahoning Valley continues its way around the Valley. The exhibit will next stop at three of the branches of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Libraries. The exhibit will first go on display at the main branch in Warren on Mahoning Avenue from July 24 through Aug. 4. It will then move to the Liberty branch from Aug. 7-18 and finally to the Howland Branch from Aug. 20-30. The exhibit consists of clips from the Valley's history over the past 80 years.
First Night choir contest
YOUNGSTOWN -- First Night Youngstown Inc. will sponsor a choir contest at its New Year's Eve celebration from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 31. All choirs, church and secular, may apply. Ten choirs will be selected to compete for monetary prizes. First-place prize will be $250 and second, $100. For an application, contact the First Night office at (330) 742-0445. The deadline to apply is Sept. 30.
Jim Cliff exhibit at TAG
WARREN -- Trumbull Art Gallery, 196 E. Market St., downtown, will open an exhibition of work by Youngstown artist Jim Cliff with a reception Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition will be on view through Aug. 11. Both the reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. Cliff, a 2005 graduate of Youngstown State University, has had his work exhibited at the McDonough Museum of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art and the Oakland Center for the Arts, all in Youngstown. His work was included in the 2004 and 2005 Student Exhibition at the McDonough, where he was awarded the Myron Lepore Drawing Award in 2004 and the Bonnie Lass Painting Award in 2005.
Lady SteelHounds tryouts
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown SteelHounds are hosting their second annual Lady SteelHounds tryouts beginning with the preliminary round July 29 at the Chevrolet Centre. The final audition will be announced at a later date. The Lady SteelHounds are the official dance team of the Central Hockey League's SteelHounds. The 12-person squad performs at all Hounds home games in addition to making public appearances around the Mahoning Valley. Registration for the first stage of auditions begins at 8 a.m., with tryouts starting at 10 a.m. Participants are required to bring a pair of jeans, perform a 30-second freestyle or choreographed routine as well as complete the application form and questionnaire, both of which are available online.
