Boardman's PONY All-Stars win regional crown, 13-6

The 13-year-old team advances to Hagerstown, Md. for the Zone Tournament.
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman 13-year old PONY League baseball team had to work its way out of the losers bracket to capture the regional championship Monday at the Fields of Dreams.
In the title game Boardman defeated Butler, 13-6.
Joey Markovitch came on in relief in the third inning, worked four innings, allowing three hits and striking out five to pick up the win. Tyler Walls hit two doubles, two singles, scored four times and drove in two runs. Mark Calutti added a double, single and drove in two runs.
Boardman upended Butler, 15-3, to advance to the title contest.
Carmen Tarantino worked four innings, allowing four hits and striking out six to pick up the win.
He also hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, added two singles and had three RBIs. Alec Neapolitan hit three doubles, scored twice and drove in a run. Tyler Blangero hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning and had three RBIs. David DiBernardi hit three singles and drove in four runs.
Boardman advances to Hagerstown, Md., for the PONY Zone tournament where it will meet Hagerstown (Md.) Sunday at 8:30 p.m. in the double elimination event. The champion will move on to Chino Hills, Cal., for the World Series.
Boardman advanced to the championship round of the regional tournament after splitting a pair of games Sunday.
Boardman lost to Butler, Pa., 10-0, in its first game, then defeated Vesta, 3-1.
Carmen Tarantino singled and scored Boardman's first run on a bunt by Danny Dougherty. Mark Calutti and Tyler Blangero scored on a hit by Tyler Walls for Boardman's remaining runs.
Walls had two hits in the game.
Markovitch earned the win.
Babe Ruth 13s
SPRINGFIELD -- The 13-year-old Youngstown Babe Ruth All-Stars advanced to the championship game of the state tournament.
Youngstown (3-0) advanced after beating Mount Vernon, 15-1, in five innings Sunday, when three pitchers combined on a three-hitter while Dan Popio had a double and three RBIs.
Winning pitcher Ryan Gallagher allowed two hits in the first three innings before Adam Robb gave up one hit in one inning. Carter Hill pitched the fifth.
Brock McGivern had two hits and Tim Cheslik had a double, two RBIs and scored three times. Robb and Reese Swatsworth both doubled and knocked in two runs apiece. Robb also scored twice.
Babe Ruth 15s
ZANESVILLE -- Youngstown advanced to a state semifinal game by beating Jefferson County, 15-2.
Dan Eich struck out three and gave up two hits in 52/3 innings for Youngstown, while. Nick Crum got the save.
Jaimee Shepherd had two hits, including his second two-run homer of the tournament, to key Youngstown's attack. Anthony Franceschelli and Shawn Roman had two hits apiece.
