Officers approved
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township trustees promoted two police officers. They moved Michael J. Sinkovich from part-time to full-time status, effective Wednesday. Sinkovich's new wage is $18.54 an hour. He has been with the township police department since Dec. 1, 1998. Mitchell D. Moore was promoted from Corporal I to Lieutenant IV, retroactive to June 28. He joined the township police department Sept. 6, 1990. His hourly wage is $21.77.
The trustees voted Tuesday to not oppose a liquor license request presented by Jump In Jacks Chicken Shack at 9159 Market St. The site is in a dry area. But the liquor option was included on the township ballot, and was approved by voters.
National Night Out
VIENNA -- Vienna Township residents are invited to observe National Night Out with a community picnic from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Bicentennial Gazebo. The event will include food and entertainment. Soloist Michalene Wingard will open at 6:15 p.m. and the Wrangler Band (country rock) will perform at 7.
This event is sponsored by the Vienna Township Neighborhood Watch, township trustees, Turn Around Group, Inc., Patrick's Service, Ethel's Beauty Shop, McCullough Pro Hardware, Airport Auto Sales and Mike Cornfield. In case of rain, the event will be canceled.
Internet task force
NEW WATERFORD --Police chief Daniel Haueter has joined the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. "Internet crime has become the new wave of crime against children," said Bill Mason, Cuyahoga County prosecutor, who founded the OICAC Task Force six years ago. The task force is made up of numerous Ohio prosecuting attorneys, sheriffs and chiefs of police, as well as state and federal authorities.
Mount Carmel Festival
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 8th Annual Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival will kick off with a Scholarship Breakfast at 7:45 a.m. Thursday in the church at 343 Via Mt. Carmel. A pair of $1,000 scholarships will be presented to two students attending Youngstown State University. Anthony J. Lariccia, a vice president with Merrill Lynch and a local philanthropist, will be the guest speaker.
History with lunch
NILES -- The deadline to make a reservation for the annual Luncheon on the Lawn sponsored by the Niles Historical Society is Saturday. The event will begin at noon July 29 on the grounds of the Ward-Thomas Museum, 503 Brown St., Niles, with Elizabeth Cole Clark, retired Howland history teacher, speaking about the history of the struggle for women's rights. Tickets are $20 each, and all proceeds go to the upkeep of the museum. Call (330) 544-2143.
