Tuesday, January 24, 2006

Hurricanes 7, Canadiens 3
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Eric Staal and Justin Williams each had a goal and two assists to help Carolina win its eighth straight home game. Andrew Ladd and Erik Cole each added a goal and an assist for the Hurricanes, and Bret Hedican, Craig Adams and Matt Cullen also scored. Tomas Plekanec had two goals and Francis Bouillon also scored for the Canadiens. Montreal has lost seven straight away from home and 16 of its past 17.
Bruins 3, Capitals 2
WASHINGTON -- Wayne Primeau scored twice and Boston ended Washington's season-high four-game winning streak. Brad Boyes also scored for Boston, and Brad Isbister and Eric Nickulas each had two assists. The Bruins have won three of four games and earned points in five straight. Brian Willsie and Brooks Laich scored for the Capitals, who failed in a bid to win five straight for the first time since March 3-11, 2001. Washington's Alexander Ovechkin was shut out, ending an eight-game point streak that matched the rookie's season high.
Predators 3, Red Wings 2
DETROIT -- Scott Hartnell scored in the second period and Nashville kept the one-goal lead it had when the game was suspended in November after Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer collapsed on the bench with cardiac arrest. Although the teams played a full 60-minute game Monday night, Nashville started with a 1-0 advantage on Greg Johnson's goal from the game at Detroit on Nov. 21 that was stopped with 7:30 left in the first period. The game resumed on a date originally scheduled to be Nashville's home game against Detroit. The Predators will play that home game against the Red Wings on March 30. Fischer, who attends occasional games and practices, is being treated with medicine, is undergoing regular tests and has not been cleared to play. The team has not given a timetable for the 25-year-old Czech's return. The Predators are 5-0-3 in their last eight games, pulling within of one point of the Western Conference-leading Red Wings. Detroit had won four straight. Steve Sullivan also scored for Nashville, and Tomas Vokoun made 39 saves. Pavel Datsyuk and Mathieu Schneider scored for Detroit.
Senators 4, Maple Leafs 3
OTTAWA -- Daniel Alfredsson scored his 30th goal and Dominik Hasek made 23 saves to lead Ottawa to its second home win over Toronto in three nights. Mike Fisher, Wade Redden and Bryan Smolinski also scored for Ottawa, which beat Toronto 7-0 on Saturday. The Senators improved to 6-0 against their provincial rivals this season and have outscored them 36-12. Tie Domi, Kyle Wellwood and Nik Antropov scored for Toronto, which has lost six straight overall. Toronto defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo sustained a concussion during the first period and was taken off the ice on a stretcher after his head struck the boards following a collision with Ottawa's Vaclav Varada.
Blues 4, Canucks 0
ST. LOUIS -- Curtis Sanford stopped 34 shots for his third shutout of the season and Mike Sillinger scored for the fifth straight game, helping St. Louis end a nine-game losing streak. Vladimir Orsagh, Christian Backman and Petr Cajanek also scored for the Blues, whose last victory also came over the Canucks on Jan. 2. The slump was two games shy of a franchise-record 11-game losing streak earlier this season. Sanford, who has four shutouts in 28 career starts, was at his best in the third period when the Canucks had a 21-5 shots advantage. Vancouver, beginning a seven-game trip, was blanked on four power plays in the final period.
