YOUNGSTOWN -- A Falls Avenue man shot in the leg told police there has been gunfire in the South Side area of Overland and Cleveland avenues for several days. William Daniels, 61, was in satisfactory condition Wednesday night in St. Elizabeth Health Center after a bullet from a passing car entered his car and grazed his leg. Police said Daniels was picking up his daughter on Hillman Street and was driving south on Overland Avenue between Falls and Cleveland avenues around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday when he was shot.
Kindergarten seminar
POLAND -- The Mahoning South Catholic Schools Leadership Team will have a seminar on "How To Prepare Your Child for Kindergarten" at 7 tonight at Holy Family School, 2731 Center Road. The program is open to all parents. Schools are beginning to accept registrations for enrollment in the fall. The program will cover social and academic readiness, age requirements and motor skills in a one-hour session.
Reducing voter districts
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County commissioners are meeting Friday to talk about reconfiguring the county's voting districts. Commissioners have appointed a citizens committee to look at new voting systems and decreasing the number of voting districts. The 10 a.m. meeting is in the commissioners' meeting room. Commissioner Dan Vogler said they want to eliminate some smaller districts and possibly split up some larger ones.
Honored trustee
VIENNA -- Outgoing township trustee Glen Wireman received a plaque of appreciation at a recent meeting of Vienna Township Neighborhood Watch. The organization, which started three years ago, honored Wireman for his support of the organization and for never missing a meeting.
Lewis elected president
AUSTINTOWN -- The Austintown Democratic Club elected Chris Lewis as its president. Lewis, 26, is the youngest president of the political club, established in 1958. Others elected to the club's executive board are Dale Basista, vice president; Bill Glaros, treasurer; Bill Basista, secretary; and Dean McClain, Walter Labazon, Scott McClain and Ronald Gerberry, trustees.
Joining march in D.C.
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The New Castle Chapter of People Concerned for the Unborn Child will make a trip to the 33rd annual March for Life Monday in Washington, D.C. The event marks the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision Jan. 22, 1973, legalizing abortion. Buses will leave at 5 a.m. Monday from St. Joseph the Worker Church, 1111 S. Cascade St. The fee is $25 for adults; $15 for students. Area residents will participate in the noon rally on the National Mall then go to Capitol Hill for meetings with Pennsylvania Sens. Baby-sitting classes
BOARDMAN -- The Mahoning Chapter American Red Cross, which serves Hubbard, Girard and Liberty in Trumbull County as well as Mahoning County, is offering baby-sitting classes for 11- to 15-year-olds from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Boardman Park. The $30 participation fee includes all materials needed, a certification card, wall certificate, 30 business cards, a Red Cross pen and date book, and an American Red Cross certified baby sitter T-shirt. WARREN -- The Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District will have swearing-in ceremonies and a reorganization meeting at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court will officiate in Courtroom No. 1 on the third floor of the county courthouse.
