SALEM -- For local basketball fans, opening round action featured a little of everything Monday night at Salem High School as the boys Division III sectional began with two contests.
The opener featured Crestview topping South Range 60-43 in a battle of area teams while Waterloo's prolific scorer Eric Schiele netted 42 in his team's 72-64 win over Brookfield.
Crestview used nice runs early and put the game away in the fourth quarter as the Rebels turned back their new rivals for the second time in three meetings.
"I think early on we got some good looks and took some of the steam out of them." said Crestview coach Rick Gates. "They may have been frustrated as well."
With South Range up 9-7 early, Crestview finished the opening session on a 7-0 run, thanks to five points from Tony Amabile who aided Crestview's balanced attack with 17 points.
Rebels take command
Up 14-9 after one, Crestview then fashioned another run early in period two, this one a 10-2 uprising, to take a 25-16 lead at 4:25 of the half. The Rebels were not enjoying the best of nights from the field, however, going 10 of 29 for the half. They made up for this by turning the ball over just five times en route to the 30-21 intermission lead.
By period three, Andy Walton and Travis Gustafson were starting to assert themselves inside. Gustafson finished with 19 points and nine rebounds. Walton, meanwhile, fashioned a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Crestview put the game away early in the fourth quarter when Gustafson scored twice and Drew Gates connected on a fast break layup. Those three scores put the Rebels on top 48-30 at 5:47 of the game.
"I didn't want to think we had them put away at that point," said Gustafson. "I've seen teams come back so we wanted to keep playing hard."
Gates agreed. "I think that run helped, but it wasn't over," he said.
Faces Campbell next
Crestview (13-8) will play top-seeded Campbell on Friday.
"We've scouted them twice," said Gates. "And they are a super athletic team that plays defense as well as anyone we've seen. Right now we have three days to get ready for them."
Raiders coach Jeff Hammond said the Rebels' inside game was a big factor in the loss.
"I didn't think it would be but it was," he said. "Plus for some reason everything was a real struggle for us tonight. Then, once they started hitting their shots, they got confident."
South Range (7-14) was led by Dan Holloway with 16 points.
Waterloo-Brookfield
In the nightcap all eyes were on Schiele, the state's top scorer. He didn't disappoint, scoring 42 points -- including making 19 of 21 at the foul line.
Brookfield (6-15) gave Waterloo (17-4) a game, staying close until three minutes remained.
Schiele went 3 of 9, including 0 for 6 from the 3-point line, in the first quarter as Brookfield took a 17-7 lead. By halftime, Schiele was 4 of 14 but Waterloo had cut the gap to three, 31-28.
Schiele's second half featured 15 of 16 from the line.
Warriors last lead
Brookfield used a shot from Cory Richards to grab its last lead of the night, 52-49, at 6:59 of the game. The Warriors' final chance to grab the edge was thwarted at 3:10 when Schiele stole the ball and converted it into a 61-58 lead. From there it was all Waterloo.
For Brookfield, Josh Harkulich netted 22 while Chris Bombeck had 14 and Richards 13.
