Saturday, February 25, 2006

YOUNGSTOWN -- K-9s for Compassion, a group affiliated with Delta Society Pet Partner animals, and handlers that visit area nursing homes and hospitals will conduct evaluations for people and their pets interested in becoming volunteer animal-handler therapy teams.
Evaluations will be March 18-19 by appointment at St. Elizabeth Health Center, Belmont Avenue.
The evaluations consist of a 22-step test formulated by animal behaviorists, veterinarians and other Pet Partners throughout the country for more than a 25-year span.
The evaluation involves basic obedience and aptitude. Any animal that isn't exotic or a reptile is eligible to be evaluated, including any breed of dog.
K-9s for Compassion welcomes anyone who is interested in becoming a member of the group to call (330) 534-2001 and leave his or her name, address and phone number.
The group will send out a packet of information about the evaluations and how to schedule a time slot for the evaluation in March.
It has been proved that therapy animals can provide health benefits to patients who enjoy them. The group visits nine area nursing homes and hospitals and also participates in a program at the Hubbard Public Library called "Paws to Read."
