Eight-week exercise program targets patients with arthritis



The program involves stretching, relaxation techniques and exercises.
WARREN -- Eschman Physical Therapy and the Trumbull County Board of Health are offering a free eight-week program to people who have arthritis in Trumbull County.
The 16 classes of the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program will be at the Warren SCOPE Senior Center, 220 W. Market St. at dates to be set in March. For details, call Eschman's office at (330) 372-5800 or SCOPE at (330) 399-8846.
The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program was developed in 1986 and is an effective way of managing arthritis. It teaches individuals with arthritis how to take control and responsibility in managing the condition.
This program involves instruction in gentle stretching, relaxation techniques and range-of-motion exercises specifically designed for people with arthritis. Relevant health education will also be provided during each exercise session to improve personal health and independence.
Low-impact program
The program is designed to be low impact and is ideal for those who may never have exercised before or those who may not have exercised for awhile.
Eschman, a graduate of The Ohio State University and owner of Eschman Physical Therapy LLC, has practiced as a licensed physical therapist since 1987. Board Certified in Geriatric Physical Therapy, he is one of only 114 specialists in Ohio in this area and is the only Geriatric Certified Specialist in Trumbull County.
Emily Smith, a graduate of the BS/MS Physical Therapy Program at D'Youville College and an employee of Eschman Physical Therapy, is the instructor. With her training in baton and lyrical and jazz dancing, she brings with her experience in creating fun and functional exercise routines.
She is working to pass the National Physical Therapy Exam to become a licensed physical therapist.
